I'm buying a Bond Arms Cowboy Defender. It has a 3 inch 44 special barrel and comes with the small grip. It does not have a trigger guard.

The small grip actually fits my hand pretty good, but I'm figuring I will make a longer grip that lets me get all my fingers on it. The Bond Arms extended grip is kind of fat for my hands. I saw a guy on youtube sanded them down thinner. I figure if I'm going to be in the woodshop, then I might as well start from scratch. I'm hesitant to even try the small grips because this caliber is getting up there in power/recoil.

I'm not super experienced with guns and admit to being a little shy of recoil. Most of my range time has been with a 327 Blackhawk shooting 32 magnums and a heavy barrel Ruger #1 in 22-250. I'm hoping I can start light and work my way up with this derringer using it to get used to higher recoiling guns.

For now, this will just be a range toy. I view my range time, however, as training so that I could use a gun competently if I ever decide to shoot at something other than paper. So, I would like to work up to 44 special loads beyond what is required for plinking. I currently reload for 32 h&r magnum. I will be buying 44 special dies eventually.

So, that's the background. My questions:

Would shooting cowboy 44 special loads in my derringer with the small grips be painful? Is that a good starting point for me, or should I work out the grip change first? I have also considered buying the 327 federal barrel to start with. My preference, however, is to spend that money on 44 special dies and brass.

What is the stoutest 44 special loads that you or people you know shoot out of a derringer with a 3 inch barrel? Is Buffalo Bore heavy 44 special ammo a realistic final goal? Or, is that completely insane in a gun this size?

Thanks

I think the .44 special is a fine candidate for a large derringer. However, I wouldn't want to shoot anything Buffalo Bore from one. It's not a platform that affords much in the way of control, from my experience.

I'd guess cowboy loads would make for a great time at the range. I would also guess it would foul up a ne'er-do-well's day if pressed into defense.
