I just signed up for this class for October 1 & 2. It'll be taught by LFI Staff Instructors Bob Houzenga and Andy Kemp.

We'll be shooting 1500 rounds of ammo, which I look forward to. Though expensive, I'm a firm believer in live fire training.

Any comments on the class?

Don't you mean 'Shoot 'till ya Puke'?

I took it last year with Andy and Bob in Bloomington. It's a good class, and I'd take it again but for a scheduling conflict.

While the class is pretty "high volume," it is well-structured and incorporates some some very valuable drills, skillset refinement, and individual coaching.

That said, bring extra ammo and as many (servicable) magazines as you have for your pistol. My friend and I got through close to 2k rounds a piece last year. A spare pistol is a very good idea for a class like this - we had at least two guns go down (one with a cracked frame) in our class.

My hands got chewed up pretty good (caveat: I'm a wuss) - - I'd recommend bringing some tape, moleskin and/or guaze to protect any cuts/blisters for the duration of the class [in addition to the standard guncamp packing list].

One of the most important things you can do is develop a plan to practice what you pick up at the class, which can be hard to do at a lot of the ranges here in Illinois. Your weekend will be of very limited value if you don't touch these skills/drills until you take the class again next year :) .

-feel free to ask (or PM) any specific questions.

What should be included on the guncamp list?

I'll be bringing my P229 so I hope a cracked frame won't happen! :(

Broke guns are the exception, not the rule (esp. with a service pistol like your 229). I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Guncamp packing list should include (others will chime in here): spare eyes/ears, hydration plan, personal first aid kit, sunblock, rain gear, brimmed hat, weapon cleaning kit, notepad/pen. Also nice to have: "camp" chair, snacks/powerbars, hand sanitizer. I keep everything organized in a large range bag.

I used a dump pouch at AHS, which worked out pretty good for me: I kept a bunch of loose ammo in the pouch, and used it to stow partial mags. During any downtime (waiting in line behind the other relay), I would top off the partials with the rounds from the pouch. This kept me on the line when others were back stuffing mags and got me a little extra triggertime.

Bix,

Thanks for the information. The only thing I had really thought about was bringing water but I'll make sure to pack that stuff as well. How was the weather when you guys shot? I hope that it'll be nice and cool for us. I went to IDPA a couple weeks ago and it was 90+ outside with no shade! I had my SPF 45 on, which really helped out a lot but I wish I had a long sleeve t to cover up.

I haven't been to LFI, but in a class shooting 600+ rnds/day. This is a must. I also used tight fitting leather golf gloves. They are very thin and less expesive than shooting gloves.

Shoot til ya puke! Fun class! I like Bob and Andy, down to earth fellows. :)

What to bring, El Tejon check list, to gun skul: range bag, extra mags, extra gun, extra ears, batteries for ears, hat, bandana or scraf for neck, plenty of mags, multi tool thingy, clippy knife (no reason you just want to fit in), sunblock, misquito juice, medical tape and gauze, eyes, extra eyes, duct tape (can cover pants when you tear them in going into positions), comfy shoes.

Drink your water, bring plenty of ammo, 2K. Don't overeat and stretch out. :)

About your hands: get plenty of dry practice, handle the weapon a lot. If you are not hitting a sand bag as part of your iron skin training [:D], try soaking your hands in rubbing alcohol few times a week.

LT's right, I don't think they let you in without a clippy knife.

I believe your class is at Howell. Don't know the range/shade situation there, but I'd plan on being exposed for two long days. You'll also likely spend some time on the ground in this class (unconventional shooting positions on TD2) - so dress accordingly.

If you can, post a review/AAR after the class. We don't see enough of those around here these days :) .

I don't think I'll be able to bring the extra gun because my backup would be the G30 and I can't afford to bring 2000 rounds of ammo for that gun. I'm confident that my P229 will hold up to the stress of the two days.

Yes, we will be in Howell. It's an old farm, it's not bad at all. I think I'll be okay out there. I'll make sure to bring plenty of water. I'll keep a case of it in the car in addition to the water I'll carry on me.

I'll bring 6 mags total, 2 ears, 2 eyes, 3 hats (1 bucket and 2 baseball) and a Swiss Army knife because that's the only knife I've got.

I finished the class today. It was a lot of fun and we did a lot of shooting. My shooting definitely improved by a lot. I personally went through about 1500 rounds and my fingers feel like crap from loading 12 rounds into those Sig mags. :uhoh:

I wish I could attend the next class they're offering. It'll be taught by Jim Cirillo in Bloomington, IL. If it were closer, I would definitely go but being 2 hours away from Bloomington, I would have to spend the night there.

I would do what I can to take a class with Jim Cirillo. I took one last year with him and it was great. He is a living legond. (spelling.) He is getting frail so get the training with him while he is still available.
