I live in quite a peaceful and safe community. I have never heard of anyone in my area ever having been attacked by a criminal while outside doing yard work. However, I have heard of several such stories in other parts of the country. Also, there is a new dog in the neighborhood that appears to be aggressive but is kept in the house all the time. ( I hope )

So, as it is better to be safe then sorry, I have decided to start carrying a "yard gun", i.e. a small handgun ( S&W 442 ), while outside mowing or doing other chores outside. It is not my EDC because my EDC is too big and bulky to carry in the pockets of my shorts or even under a damp from sweat T shirt. Does anyone else here do the same?

Stay safe

JJ

I carry my 26 all day everyday whether I'm at home or in public. I only remove it to go to bed.

Never know when I'll get another guy at my door with a sob story, another criminal in the area, etc.

My Bodyguard 38, which I do sometimes carry as a primary, sometimes as a BUG.

The Bodyguard was on my bench, so the 1911 was my yard gun today.

I have two "yard guns." One is a Glock 19 with two spare magazines. That us my usual option for the riding mower. When I do yard work with my pickup I have an AR-15 in the cab.

I live on a typical city residential quarter-acre lot, and maintain it myself. I use a push mower for cutting.

My "yard gun" is a .22, usually my old nickel-plated Jennings. It shoots well and straight (I've had it since 1987) and it won't matter if sweat runs down it while I'm working.

If it's not the Jennings, it's a Phoenix HP22A.

Once done and showered, I put my regular EDC on when I get dressed again.

My primary defensive strategy is to avoid yard work.
After we got a Hustler Raptor my wife took over the yard work. I used a push mower before we got it.

My edc is a S&W 642. Not a 'yard gun', but a 'always gun'.

I mounted one of those cheap plastic holsters that Springfield sends out with all their guns, just below the seat on my tractor.
Never know when a two-legged or four-legged creature is going to walk up on you.

No yard gun but if I'm home alone while working in the yard I do lock up the house and set the alarm. More concerned with someone breaking in while I'm mowing the lawn in the back.

My Ruger LCR gets EDC CCW'd. But when doing yard work, running around the woods or in the house it's a 3" ruger sp101 in a OWB holster. Haven't quite found the right holster for that job yet though.

That describes my approach to mowing the lawn.

And even when I am home, unless I an in&out doing some non-focus-stealing work around the house, my doors are locked and the alarm in on.

My sister refers to my house as The Fortress. :)

I have never gotten around to acquiring a "yard gun" (or assigning an existing one to the task), although it has crossed my mind many times.

The closest I come to a "yard gun" is my EDC (3.3" XDs .45) which is almost always in my back pocket when I am outside working.

Upon reentering the house (and turning the alarm back on), I will wipedown both myself and my pistol & holster and then place all 3 of us in front of a big fan for awhile. I get a cold drink, the pistol & holster, not. ;)

I've always thought that an already-abused J-Frame would make a wonderful "yard gun" for me.

I typically don't, but probably should. I remember one specific incidence of cutting my lawn, hearing a bark behind me, turning around, and finding the neighbor's dog (pit mixed with something) standing a few feet away and barking. I shut off the mower and calmed him down, but who knows what could have happened if I'd done the wrong thing.

If I do yard work and am getting home, I tend to leave my XDs on me, but don't typically PUT it on if I'm already home.

This actually made me laugh out loud! Well played sir!

I usually have my sp101 (357) or my Glock 23c on me while doing yard work. I live in the middle of nowhere and I am more nervous about 4 legged intruders or those of the slithering variety popping in to say hi. A couple of years back I walked out of the garage and turned the corner only to be surprised by a black bear cub messing with a bbq size propane tank. I was happy not to have come between momma and cub.

I usually strap on an FNP45 when I'm at home running around. It's really the only time I carry OWB.
There's a deer trail that runs across the property, and I've seen mountain lions on more than one occasion.
When I'm outside with my boy, I'd be negligent to NOT carry something potent.

The ones I have handy are a little .410 shot gun, 510 Remington and a suppressed 22 pistol.

Mowing and or trimming the pistol takes up less room, makes less noise and can still take out copperheads.

What our illustrious colleague Mr. Voodoo may be alluding to is the subterfuge that some home invasion burglers utilize to get you to open your front door.

In my usually-peaceful neighborhood here in suburban Los Angeles, this tactic has been used quite a bit recently. Some have posed as utility workers and once inside the house bound the homeowners then pistolwhipped the husband. The last LAPD Community Watch meeting just a few blocks away the auditorium capacity had overflowed with residents. It was standing room only; the headcount was said to have been close to 700 people. Yikes.

I'm in rural Indiana on 5 acres. When I'm on my own property I open carry. Typically a .40 Shield.

I need to get a good holster for my WW II 1911.

Just because. Seems right.
