I know we just beat the powering down thread to death but I am wondering... who else is breaking out the Big guns for deer or elk this year. I won a 375 H n H that will be getting broken in during doe season this year. I saw a guy asking about a 416 remy for whitetails so I know he's in, who else?

I know some ones wife bought them a cannon for xmas last year or found a deal on an ubermagnum that was to good to pass up. :)

Note. No one needs a reason to power up other than "I have a gun, its freaking huge, I shoot it well, and I wan't to kill something with it."

I would like to take a deer with my new to me Finnbear in .264 win mag. So I might be for a few days.

I am. I am going from a .30-30 to a muzzle loader pushing a 240 grain slug the same speed as that .30-30 is pushing a 170 grain slug. Next year it will probably be my .308, but the .30-30 or the ML may be broke out again.

MCgunner,
Some of those loads are getting into baby .308 velocities. You might actually be hitting harder with the patched ball or maxi if it is a 400 grainer moving 2000 fps vs a 170 grainer moving 2800 fps. :) Have fun.

"Have fun" trying to hit a barn if it's a regular muzzleloader twist with a 400 grainer going 2000 fps.:)

I'm sticking with my 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag.

I've actually down-sized on the 300 Win Mag....loading 165 grain pills instead of 180 this year.

i just hunt w/ whatever speaks to me in the morning... my first big game hunt this year will likely be done w/ a 300 win mag, but i do have other options available to me, and quite a few hunts lines up.

last year my first big game hunt (elk) was done w/ a 338 win mag, so i am actually powering down this year to 300 win mag - unless i get that 375 ruger i've been eyeballing...

well, it is nothing really new, but i will be out there with either my 300 win mag, or 45/70, depending on the hunt area. hot & heavy lead going fast, hard to beat!

I might slip a 7mm rem mag out this year. Haven't had anything bigger than .308 out in probably 5 or 6 years.

I'm shooting a TC Omega with 250gr Shockwaves and 150grs of 777. Well over 2000fps.

Also picked up a 1963'ish vintage Winchester 670 in .300 Win Mag that will see time in the woods this year.

I bought a Savage 111G in .25-06 that was suppossed to be a 'varmint' gun and I get the itch to use it for deer; the 'varmint' load that the gun likes is Winchester Super X 90gr positive expansion point...the 'deer' load that the gun likes is Remington 100gr CoreLokt and the sighting height is virtually the same (all I really have to do is adjust the left-right point of aim); the one thing that holds me back is that I have a Simmons 6 - 21 x 44 scope on it and the magnification is too high for shooting in the woods of southcentral PA

dad handed over his Remington 760 chambered in .30-06 and it was sighted last year for Remington Managed Recoil 125gr CoreLokt (he got ill and didn't go) and I bought a 12ga Mossberg 500 combo with a rifled slug barrel for myself, but haven't had the chance to sight it in;

yes I am powering up; if I get time to acclimate and sight in the Mossberg, then I'll use the shotgun; if I don't get time to prep then I'll use the .30-06

If the BP golfball cannon gets delivered before BP season....and i mold up some golfball-sized alloy rounds....it might be on; if given the right situation.

How'd that be for overkill?

I decided to quit rotating through the rifles this year, I will be carrying the 45/70 1895G to hunt with until it takes a deer or elk again. Seems like it's missed out the last couple years and I don't want it to feel bad. Anything that let's me get within ~200 yards it's boom time. I'm thinking the 350g cast load oughta cover it all.

Will stick with the .300WM and the .444 for Sambar over the rest of the hound season. If it ain't broke.....

May try the 338 WM on a deer just to make sure it is working right before I head out west.
