Does anyone else enjoy solo trips to the range?

I find myself going alone more and more, sometimes by circumstance, sometimes by choice.

It's so nice to just immerse yourself with no distractions & stay as long as you like.

I like shooting with friends. But, I do go to the range alone quite a bit. It is neccessary sometimes, when you have something specific to work on, or just want to be alone. In fact, part of the reason I choose my current work shift, was to have some week days off, literally so I could go to the range and have it mostly to myself.

Yeah....

that's when I get my quality shootin' done.

Not that I mind social shootin'. It's just that it winds up being more social than shootin'.

Shooting alone is nice - what I like about it is being able to move at my own pace and practice drills I wouldn't otherwise be able to do with others at the range. However, I gotta say nothing beats the fun of bringing new shooters out and watching their faces light up when all the basics come together and they start getting on target consistently. About 40% of the time I go alone, and it is time well spent.

I shoot by myself all the time, and it sucks. It is just so hard to get people who are willing to spend a whole day to go shooting (I live in the middle of a coastal megalopolis and all of the rifle ranges are at least two hours away, maybe more). I find it a lot more fun to have a buddy or two go allong, and ditto to taking new shooters. It is a hoot to see their eyes light up with fear and enjoyment the first time they pull the trigger.

It is the same pleasure to me in both ways. The only drawback is that I can stay longer than a couples of hour on Sundays mornings once a while. College, Kids etc..

Well, I just got back from the range, spent a couple of hours and 300 rounds breaking in a new pistol. Had the whole place (all 160 acres) to my self. I usually go with someone else, but today I decided on the spur of the moment to go, so I went. It was really quite pleasant.

Here in WV, shooting trips are a bit different than they were in NOVA, as I shoot on a large, deserted expanse of public land.

I go by myself quite often - in fact, the last time I went to the place where I shoot it was to study for a calculus test - I set some targets up downrange, and fired off a few shots when I got stuck on a problem

I usually shoot alone because most of the time I go to the range whenever I get the urge, last minute decision.

There are different types of shooting for me. When I shoot alone, which is most of the time, I am at the range to hone my skills. I go slowly and focus on breathing, trigger control, and muscle control, all with the intention of getting the groups as small as possible.

When I shoot with others, the goal is just to have fun and get the lead out--maybe teach a few gallon jugs of water a lesson they won't forget.

I prefer shooting alone- I often get to the range at dawn before anyone else- it's the best part of the day- I setup, open the thermos and have a cup of Joe and a smoke and just enjoy the solitude- then I proceed to see if I can keep 'em in the x ring- nobody to bother me and no one to share my time with- and when I'm shooting black powder, Wow- to paraphrase Robert Duvall in "Apocalypse Now", ahh, the smell of black powder in the morning, it smells like Freedom!

I do enjoy shooting alone sometimes. Helps me think, and clear my mind. Forcing myself to concentrate on one thing, instead of the usual constant mess of thoughts.
That said, I very much enjoy shooting with friends. That way, I get to shoot more weapons than just my own!

I'm a boonie shooter. When I go out, it's my son/sons and I. Sometimes one of their friends. When it gets more that 4, I sit back and make sure everything stays safe. They are all plenty old and experienced but too many shooters in one place gives me the "heebie jeebies".

.

When I want to sight in or chrono or test new loads, I go alone. When I want to have a fun day, I'll go with others.

I do. But sometimes I like the company. I dont have a private place to shoot, so even when I'm alone, I'm not alone.

One thing a buddy and I have been doing is racing to the end of a 33 round glock magazine. Now that's fun. A complete waste of ammo, but fun. But the mag dump isnt as much fun when there isn't any competetion.

Here in the PRNJ there are no open areas left to shoot...I usually go to an inside range up in Lakewood, or the public range at Fort Dix. None of my friends are shootists.

80% of the time I go alone. I prefer to run my drills at my own pace. The remaining times I go to the range I usually go with a new shooter (no lack of volunteers at the college I teach at).

New shooters require instruction and trigger time with a half dozen of my pistols to see what they are comfortable with. The main purpose is to get them to enjoy the experience so I always bring pistols with different comfort levels. Needless to say, I don't get much shooting in when I go out with newbies.

I've had 300lb football players go recoil shy with .22 pistols, and 95lb coeds shooting my 1911 like it was a water pistol and they were the reincarnation of Annie Oakley. I'm happy to say about half of them immediately apply for their New Jersey Firearms ID as soon as we are done.

I've taken out about about 2 dozen this past year. A nation of riflemen - one at a time. It's worth it...even if I don't get to shoot much on those occasions.

George Thorogood wrote a song about it:

I shoot alone
Yeaaaaaa with nobody else
You know when I shoot alone
I prefer to be by myself

Every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and Heckler & Koch
That's all I ever need
'Cause I shoot alone

I shoot alone

It's the only way to shoot. I seem to be more on target and focused. When I do shoot with others it is generaly only my brother and friend. The main reason I shoot alone is due to my work.

Once I moved back out in the boonies and got my own range up(Ok, it was up, it's moving again right now...the range, not me) it's the only way I have been shooting. Of course I have been accused of being anti-social... OK, hermitlike was the actual phrase but, anyway...

I shoot alone all the time. Have my privet range on my father in laws land. I'm the Cheif of smoke all the time. Of course I'm a loner.
