Thinking of geting a LR 308 B

Thanks Brad

I have loaded some rounds for a friend to try out in an LR-308 with 24 inch barrel. I loaded up 50 rounds and they shot 1 MOA at 550 yds.

Load: 43 grains Reloader 15, CCI #34 primer, Sierra MK 175, Lake City brass, COAL 2.80 inches

I believe your rifle has a shorter barrel, but this is a safe place to start. They shot well and cycled well with no feeding issues.

The shorter length of barrel will likely not degrade the accuracy, only the muzzle velocity.

i use 47 grain of wc846 and 17 gr lack city from hitechammo for plinking wirth cci primers and mixed brass ans not one problem

I have both long and short uppers for mine. Both shoot great. Not a problem to reload for. Be sure to get a case gauge, know the reloading 'rules' for SA. Only problems I've had are mag (feed) related. Shoot Amax, SSP and factory rem 150 Sp. Used ARcomp, H4895, Varget, XBR powders, haven't decided which I like best. I use the RCBS AR die set, although I didn't have any problems with the Hornady standard .308 set, but it is a roll crimp set.

150, 165, 168 Have to use SP or Amax. No fmj allowed at range where I shoot. DPMS tests (when they actually do test) with Rem 150 SPP. It's ~$15 a box on sale and is pretty accurate to 100 yds.

168 gr Hornady match over 42.7 gr of Varget. CCI 200 in PPU brass fired through my gun. OAL 2.8. No issues in a LR-308L.

168 gr Sierra or Nosler HPBT match bullet over 41 gr of IMR 4895 or 42 gr of RE 15 gives my LR308B consistent sub moa groups. Fed or LC brass.
Go up about 1 gr if using Win or Hornady brass.

I have the Bushmaster .308 ORC which is essentially the same as the DPMS. I'm using it for hog hunting. My shots usually aren't more than 125 yards so I don't need a max power load. I use 39 grains of Varget behind a Hornady 180 BTSP.

I tried roughly equivalent loads of a few other powders. Next best for me was 41.1 grains of IMR4064, followed by 41.8 grains of H380. They all shot well enough for my purpose, and one has to keep in mind that I'm not a great target shooter.

Basically they all worked, and they all cycled the rifle just fine.

I shoot a Remington R25 which is the DPMS rifle with Remingtons name on it. It is chambered for .308 rather than Nato, and has a tight chamber. Although Remington factory ammo worked perfectly, I had trouble getting factory Federal Power Shok ammo to cycle past the first loaded magazine shot. Therefore just to be safe, I bought an RCBS small base die set & a Wilson Case Length Gauge.

I set the sizer to only set the shoulder back .002" from where it was post-fired from the R25's chamber, trimmed it, added CCI 200's, 41.5 gr/ IMR 4895, and finished with 165gr Nosler Ballistic tip bullets, pressed in just enough to load trouble-free into the magazines. (the magazines prevent reloads from even approaching the lands in the chamber so they are the limiting factor for cartridge length.)

Result was ammo that cycled perfecty like the Remington Factory ammo did, and my 5 shot, 100m groups were 1 inch and better....first try at the range on a cold snowy slightly breezy day. I was pleased.

I like the rifle....my only wish was that it was as light as a .223.

BTW, if you want a rifle that will cycle cheap Russian Fodder, you might look for a Nato chambered version....my R25 won't.

I have a DPMS AR-10 with a 16" bbl. the rifle shoots well with 135 gr SMK bullets behind 46 gr. of Varget. Haven't gotten the 168 gr SMK to shoot as well but working on it. I FL size .005 less than fired cases and feeds very smoothly with no issues to date.

Jdillon-can i ask what twist rate your specific barrel has? Am still trying to use lighter bullets in a 16 in RRA, but not getting the accuracy desired. It does real well with the 168 grainers. Am trying to get some sense of the association between shorte barrels and twist rates.

thanks
