I'm finally buying my first shotgun, and since I've not spent near as much time with shotguns as I have with rifles or handguns, I'd like to find some plastic training ammo to practice loading/unloading, cycling etc.

When I first brought handguns into my house, I got some bright orange plastic cartridges so I could safely educate and demonstrate for my wife. I'd like to repeat this...

I've checked my usual sources for tactical 'stuff', and I've yet to find anyone who carries 100% plastic shotshells. So in desperation, I turn to the collective here. Does anyone know where I can get some 12ga, 2 3/4 training ammo?

Alternately, I suppose I could just get snap-caps, but they're more expensive...perhaps both are in order...

Somebody makes cheap snap caps. I have some 12 ga. black plastic snap caps around here, but unless I can find the package I can't tell you who made them or where I got them. (Probably Cabela's, but who knows.)

I use pachmyr plastic snap caps. They're blue, although not as bright as orange, they're still easily seeable.

But it also is great for reloading drills, and for teaching others safe firearm handling. The pachmyr also has the primers at the end of the shells.

Kleenbore : www.kleen-bore.com has the brass and aluminum ones...haven't seen many of "colors" since the shotshells are colors...especially red,and orange used to be used by Fiocchi(32 ga) ..Perhaps since so many "colors" exist and nobody make the all brass ( or remembers for that matter) all brass shells, it is a SAFETY consideration, to use brass or aluminum.

edit: forgot about Pach's...since Peter's no longer making their blue hulls, that makes sense. Really haven't seen many in a while in colors...we jsut made our own dumy rounds...hummm.

If you want some dummy shells that will LAST, give the A-ZOOM machined aluminium ones a try; they're anodized red, and are available through Brownells and Dillon.

Go to the Brownells website ( www.brownells.com ) and put Action Proving Dummies in the search engine. The Brownells dummies are properly weighted to work through an action just like loaded ammunition.

Ditto on the Brownells action proving dummies, especially if you’ll be getting a pump, auto, etc.

Snap caps are useful for dry firing, but the action proving dummies give you the heft of a loaded shotshell, useful when demonstrating the function of a shotgun with an action (ie, anything other than a break-open).

If you’re looking for plastic shells for any other reason, a company called “Activ†used to make shells with a one-piece plastic hull and base…called “Red Devilsâ€, IIRC…

Well, today I found tucked away on some bottom shelf at my local store one box of A-Zoom Snap-Caps. They heft nicely, so I picked them up. Now I've just got to wait to get my scattergun in...

Thanks for the reccomendations getns!
