I have 3 different AR’s. Two are Bushmasters, one is DPMS, and all 3 are different configurations. I’ve noticed that no matter what type of ammo I use, I have never had a failure to feed with only one mag. It’s an old Colt 30rd mag. So, it got me thinking, who makes the best mags? Also, any opinions as to weather or not any one capacity mag is better or more reliable than another, say 20 or 30rd?

I don’t mean to start a S-storm, but the magazine is the weakest link in most auto loading firearm.

I dont think so

they are 10rd's that came with them. I bought a magizine brush, and try to clean them the best i can.

The Colts are really popular and usually cost more because of it.

Any of the real military contract mags will be equivelent. I'm partial to the teflon coated Labelle's myself and actually prefer the milsurp 20 round mags over those.

You could try replacing the springs on the Bushmaster and DPMS mags. It's possible they've gotten weak. Or the feedlips could be worn out.

I have the 10 rounders too (damn cali), their site says to soak them in a strong detergent and then air dry them with an air gun or other form of compressed air. I have heard this does not work well though. Damnit.

Anybody have any luck cleaning a sealed mag?

I like the old Colt 20 round magazines. They're straight body, unlike the newer production 20 round magazines that are curved like the 30 rounders.

Check over at AR15.com

They have a comprehensive list of all the offical government manufacturers for magazines.

I have some original Colt 20 rounders (straight body) that are great for high power shooting and some "made for the Military" Okay and Adventureline brand 30 rounders. I even have 3 Colt 30 round mags that I found in a local antique store, still in the GI pouch. The owner wasn't sure what they were, but she was happy to get $20 for the whole kit and caboodle, "whatever it was".

(I keep going back thinking that there is probably a full auto sear sitting in a candy dish somewhere in the store, but so far no luck.)

I've replaced most of the original followers on the older mags with the green followers and never had a FTFeed.

But I never quite understood the folks that want to make their mags "pretty".

Back before the crust of the earth had cooled, when I carried one "for real" we never gave a darn about how the mag looked, just that it didn't have any dents, the feed lips weren't bent or cracked and the folower was loose enough to feed.

I cant check any other sites.

I'm at work and this is the only gun site that the filters dont catch, and my home computer fried its self the other day. I have one of those Adventureline mags too. It also works great, but the colt mags seem to work the best. It's just that around here they can be pricy. The sportsmans guide has some for about $65 for 3, Stag arms and Dpms are $25 each. any thoughts.

I would say that HK is producing the best M-16 mags. They are a lot more heavy-duty and from what we've been seeing on the range, very realiable and rugged. The down side is that you are going to pay dearly for them through.:(

If you are looking for something lower priced, I've had good luck with the mags made by C Products. They run about $11 each. I've got both the 20 (curved) and 30 round versions from them and haven't had any problems. I've seen a few reports of some QC issues with them, but they seem to be good about swapping out the mags.

Some people like the D&H mags (supposedly formerly LaBelle) you can get from various vendors, but there have been some of issues with them that require a bit of dremeling.

Many people say you can't go wrong with anything marked Colt, NHMTG (which, as I understand, are made by Okay who also makes the Colt, Bushmaster and RRA mags), Center Industries, or H&K, but you'll pay a bit more for them.

You can get D&H, C Products, Okay Ind., all 3 are great mags. If you're heartset on "Colt" mags, pick up the Okay's, same mag, diff. floorplate. You shouldn't pay more than $12 for standard mags fram any of the 3.

My D&H mags work great in my Armalite. I have heard people say the C Products mags are better, but I haven't used them. I have one made by NHTMG or something like that. It has worked very well also.

Bushmaster and RRA are one of the best mag makers there are in 20-30rd
but pretty much all manufacterers 10 round and 5 mags malf 85% of the time

I don't think Bushmaster and RRA make their on mags. I think they use D&H Industries or the NHMTG mags.

Last thread I saw on magazines, people were really talking up the C Products mags. I don't have one, but intended to try to get a couple when I had the chance.

I like the D&H mags, too. I also got a bunch of type 65 steel mags that are made in Tawain that work very well. The mags that I like the best are the ones my dad got in the Army in the 70's. They are aluminum and work the best.

I don't think Bushmaster makes their own mags either, but the 30 rounder "Bushmaster" mags I have work nearly flawlessly. I say 'nearly' because my rifle has a hard time stripping the first round from one of the mags when it is fully loaded, but it might have been the mag I accidentally dropped on the concrete too though:eek:

I bought a couple of 20 rd mags called "USA Mags" or something like that, they work ok for feeding, but they won't eject from the gun and are hard to insert- I'd definately stay away from them.

AR magazines

My PD bought Bushmaster carbines in August of 2002.

We've had about a dozen of the Bushmaster magazines split on the seam on the back side of the magazine where the pop welds broke.

I've owned ARs since 1977 and did 20 years in the national guard and I only saw that a few times with GI spec magazines. I have a bunch of Colt and Adventure Line magazines that I bought used at a gun show in 1977 that still work fine, although I have replaced the springs.

Jeff22, I have asked this question before. What are "GI spec" magazines? I have seen some real crappy mags say they are GI. I have seen some real ugly looking mags advertised as that at gun shows. What does the floor plate say? Who made them? That is why I wouldn't trust the "AR Stoner" mags mentioned above. The advertisement didn't say who made them or show a picture of the floor plate. I don't mean to jump on you, just looking for clarification.
