Sitting in my ladder stand in w. PA. at two o'clock on this snowy Friday. Sounded wounded rabbit and woodpecker in distress to no avail. Four minutes after the female coyote call a small, young, dumb male 'yote came trotting down the trail and got himself shot at 40 ft. with a .22. I was 3/4 of a mile from my front door in a suburban neighborhood. We have plenty of these varmints around and my neighbors have no idea. IMG_0695.JPG IMG_0699.JPG

Im from p.a and i have a few under my belt. Congrats.... one of my favorite moments was on my trail cam. I had a doe eating on cam the next pic she's looking at somethkng the next oic shes gone and a coyote blurred in pic running sfter her. Amazing pics if i can find it i will post it..

I bought a coyote call that goes Yankee doodle aaaaaooooowwwooohhhhhhh lol....
On a serious note i guess i was lucky to have a property butted up against what seems like endless woods between country farm crops fields and plenty of water sources and deer

In many populated areas like my county you have hunters who call and move on and do this constantly with many different sounds. They educate the animals without ever getting one. Out west you have more coyotes than people by a large factor.

The only eastern coyotes I've called in were while using a fawn call in bow season to get does to come closer. Three times either coyotes or wild dogs came in first. One small pack of canines had 3 dogs and a coyote.

You fellows in the "Low Country" would never believe how the Government Hunters call in the "Desert Dogs". They have large sirens mounted in truck beds.
When the coyotes hear the Sirens they begin howling. The Hunters mark the locations and call in the air planes. The shooters using long magazine shot guns take out vast numbers of "Dogs" with every dive. They fly the Divide East of me 3 times a month. The last report was they averaged 45 Coyotes per flight. More Government Hunters have been hired lately than I can recall from the past.

No! These are harvested and sold to fur buyers.. They had a warehouse in Casper years ago. The coyotes were frozen and stacked in long rows.
I always wanted a picture of that. But no cameras were allowed. :)

I don't know how Wyoming is doing it these days, but I know in Nebraska, they used to send a ground crew out picking up behind the plane. Sometimes carcasses were tested for diseases and whatnot. Other times, I don't know if they sold for fur prices or just dumped em, if it's contracted, they probably sold them, but if it was state employed, I know that state is not allowed to private sale inventory in general and they would have likely wound up in a pile out in forest land to go back to the bugs.

We shoot coyotes in New York all the time. My dad got three last spring at 330 yards. They ate his cat. He doesn't even really like cats, but it was his. Used a 30-06 Ruger No 1. My brother uses a wounded rabbit call. In the summer it goes like this. Place call in the field. Walk to your hide. Shoot coyote. Turn off and pick up your call. Head back to house. I don't do either. Shoot em when I see em.

Shotgun out an airplane?

I've only flown in prop planes a number of times but I have a hard time believing that.

What is min speed? 80 mph? Shotgun range is about 50 yards... Seems like you'd be risking a lot to shoot a mangy dog.

That has been a VERY common practice out here for a long time, and for what it's worth, I've personally watched the old man drop a yote at distances closer to 100yds than 50 with a full choke 00 buck. When you have packs of yotes ripping up $500 calves, the risk decreases greatly. Watch the helicopter teams netting caribou for research. There's things folks do all the time we'll rarely see first hand.....

ETA use the Google Fu to search up videos of coyote airplane hunts for depredation and see how things are done this side of the river, one is even available from 1951 according to the thumbnail.

^Interesting. Helicopter makes more sense from shooting standpoint but not operational cost. You won't see me clipping the trees and hills in a cub to shoot vermin though!
None the less good shooting on the OP. I haven't had the best luck calling but if they are close they'll come in for a peek at whats making the noise. Its usually just me making horrible noises with a rabbit squealer.

I'm not a big baseball fan but the hat showed that this was a small animal, young enough to fall for the female call in daylight in a suburban neighborhood. I don't know if an older animal would do the same but I'm going to try again before the breeding season ends.

They do that in NM too. A rancher here told me the rodent population noticeably goes up after these campaigns.

And that is a fact. The Government Hunters have been very aggressive here. The rewards are more Jack Rabbits, Cotton Tails and Prairie Dogs. The big increases in Arctic Wolves decrease the Coyote population. But the wolves are killing off moose calves. Who is really wining? Wolves are a Big problem.:(

In regard to wolves, some have suggested that ranchers "shoot, shovel and shut up".

You are 100% correct. We hope President Trump will return our wolf hunting. President Obama stopped Wolf hunting in Wyoming,
