Can you tell me about the Savage 12 FV in 223 or 6.5 Creedmoor I want a target rifle just for paper & steel
out to 600 yards max I was just about to put down on a Ruger American predator in 6.5 Creedmoor But then
I came across The Savage 12FV both are about the same price the Savage has 26" barrels the 223 has a 1/9 twist and the 6.5 Creedmoor has 1/8 the Ruger has 22" barrels the 223 is 1/8 twist
as does the 6.5 Creedmoor I would also like to put this on the table they both come in 308 win
savage 26" barrels the Ruger has 18" both 1/10 twist what would be better setup for me
thanks

Lucky for 600 and under a .223 will get it done, but if you ever want/get the chance to stretch that you will see the benefits of a 6.5 creedmoor I own a savage 12 LRP in 6.5 creedmoor I'll say this for savage she ain't the prettiest girl at the dance but she is more accurate than most people will ever need plus the accutrigger rocks! I'd get the savage not a big ruger American fan

I'd go with the faster twist, if you're going with .223. It will stabilize 75 or 77 grains bullets better for the 600yd stretch.
The Savage would facilitate barrel swaps more easily, if that's a consideration.
tough choice

Savage, easier to modify, the fv will shoot like a dream at the bench, and hard to beat the accuracy. I have nothing against the ruger, and if we were talking about a walking around hunting gun, I might vote that way. Creed. Definitely. Depending on your climate, you might find that the gusts play with your bullets like a fiddle with the .223 at 600 yds. You CAN do 600 with it, but past 300, there are days my .223 doesn't come out to play. If you go with the .223, get the faster twist, still though, even with the longer bullets, side by side to a cm will leave it lacking ever so slightly. I'm NOT a cm fanboy, but in this case, it's the one I'd pick.

If this is just a target rifle I would go savage 12.

If you will consistently be shooting at 600 I would opt for the 6.5 creedmoor. 600 is about the max distance for 223.

If a lot of your shooting will be at 300-400 I would opt for 223.

For what it's worth I had a savage 12 in 223 for a while. It was amazingly accurate. I traded it off because at the time I only had access to 100 yard range and I felt ridiculous lugging around a 12 pound 223 to shoot at distances I shoot my 22 at.

My only criticism of savage in general is the cock on opening takes a little time to get used to but this is a very minor complaint.

Savage will be a better bench shooter but if I had to carry it over the hills to go coyote hunting or something I would rather have the ruger. I have a savage 12bvss in 223. I just rebarreled it to 308 due to getting bored with shooting 223. A little 223 in a 12 lb gun just isn't that much fun to me anymore. You get a lot of shooting for your money but you can barely tell your shooting a gun.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. The Savage is a better gun imo, but if you plan to carry it hunting quite a bit, the Ruger may be a better choice. The one downside to the Savage 12FV is that it is heavy. If you're using it as a bench gun this isn't a problem, it's just not something I'd want to lug around on a hunting trip.

If you're not planning to do that the 12FV's are one of the best guns for the money imo. You get the legendary Savage receiver, they are still top bolt release so you have a ton of stock and chassis options, the triggers are great out of the box, they have a large comfortable bolt knob right out of the box, and they are extremely accurate. They are also very easy to rebarrel yourself which is nice if you ever want to change it up later on down the road. This is just the way to go imo if you're doing anything other than just hunting with it.
