Hello Joey Lawrence...and yes your right. That's why ruger chargers come with bipods which is the most useful thing in the box from my experience. If it were set up with a hand grip it would be classified as a sbr I believe.

I did notice that the picture's small print claims that "the photo may not represent the exact product." I mean, could you sell at pistol and include in the box a forward grip without the ATF tripping out? Seems like a very very grey area.

You can't. That pistol is set up as an AOW. I'm guessing they just threw on the forward grip for the picture to make it look cool. And if the grip was included in the box I would think it could easily be a constructive possession issue.

I believe if it's over 26" overall length it becomes a 'firearm' rather than a pistol and a VFG is allowed. I didn't see the overall length so not sure what the actual product would be.
There are companies (and threads here on THR) that sell 'pistol' AR's with a longer length and a VFG, there is an ATF letter floating around as well I believe.

You're right, but that one has an 11.5" barrel. So if they're using a normal pistol buffer tube and the flash hider isn't permanently installed, it's going to be a little bit shorter than 26" overall.

Franklin armory has a copy of the ATF letter on its site. It is legal. It is not an AOW because it is over 26"

Shorter with a VFG would be an AOW.

If it had [strike]ever had[/strike] started out with a stock on it, even without the stock it would be an SBR.

But it was built in this config from the start and is just a firearm.

Really? I'm surprised. I've played around with different uppers on a pistol lower to see what came out to over 26", and I strongly remember that an 11.5" barrel on a normal pistol lower was less than 26". I wonder if they're using a longer buffer tube?

That's not the case anymore. Now you can go from pistol to rifle and back again.

True. I said it wrong. If it had a stock on it before it was built as a pistol, it would be an SBR. I know well it can be a pistol first, that's how I do all my builds. :)

In the ATF letter on Franklin's site, it's stated to be 26-1/8. I have two pistol buffers that differ by about 1/4".

The model number is XO-26b for a reason. Its overall length is over 26", and therefore it is classified as a "firearm" and can have a forward grip.
