Why all the gun-related demand/shortages?

What motivated you to "stock up" or simply "get started?"

Ranges are full, ammo is being bought up, reloading supplies are in high demand, and gun sales are off the charts. So I'm curious. If you are participating in this, (or were well prepared beforehand), what is your primary motivation?

likelyhood of restrictions for me, too.

however, i would have bought the same stuff in the same quantity if a pro-gunner had been elected, because my purchase was also my first ever purchase.

Just preparing.

Now if the Election went the other way, we would probably not have completed our weapons program very fast. Cold hard cash is good. But Ammo and something to shoot is even better.

People are just going crazy. =) Lots of newbies are coming out of the woodwork, getting their permits to purchase...

I bet when it settles down, there will be plenty of good second hand firearms, with hardly any rounds fired through them.

+1 on maksim's comment: People are nuts right now, for any variety of reasons, good and bad ... and this includes both newbies and longtime gunnies. The first time you walk past an empty shelf at WallyWorld and wonder where all the ammo went, you start to think, "Well, I'd better stock up, too, because there must be a shortage." And the run is on.

The same is true with gun purchases. Given the steady rush of late, people must believe that every gun currently being made is the last one that will ever come off the assembly line.

None of your four options apply to me

I've been shooting since 1960. None of this is new to me.

I've seen shortages come and go, and I didn't panic.
I've seen bans come and go, and I fought them all.

I haven't bought any guns since October because I've NEVER overpaid for a gun.

Crime is lower than it has been in decades, and it continues to go down. For the last 30 years I've lived with safety and awareness, and I don't get scared about the perception of some impending future crime wave.

We are farther from civil unrest now than I experienced in the late 50's through the 70's, and even the Rodney King riots in the 1980's. I'm not fearful.

I honor your own feelings and opinions, but I've been-there-done-that and I've got better control of my own situation than ever before. The current situation doesn't make me panic. I'll fight for my Constitutional rights and never give up, but fearful panic doesn't drive me. Righteousness and freedom drive me.

I recall the odd-even days of the Embargo during the 70's those were the days. Whole towns forgot about work and daily living and turned into a third world population concerned about just one thing. FILL EM UP!

Ants, thanks for your perspective. A co-worker was wondering out loud this morning, and this poll is the result. If you aren't "stocking up" or buying new stuff right now, then the poll doesn't apply to you.

I personally bought most of my stuff years ago and am set. I feel relatively comfortable waiting this out.

The real life answer is still all those who panicked the day after the election and started buying, because with very real possibilities of bans/tax increases etc.

Some of us have been well stocked for many years, because as ants posted, we've seen shortages before, and don't want to be inconvenienced when they come along. :)

All of those are quite relevant. If you were to flip that list upside down, I think that would give you the order of importance/priority.

Well since we got the new Prez a few decitions have been made. You can't say that he is doing nothing. He is quite active. Especialy when it comes to firearms. First he had not been in office a few days and he stopped the boats at the coast that where carrying forien loads of ammunition and instructed the customs agents to not allow them in the states. Sent the ships home. Second he placed all of the spent casings that the military sold to the public to be recycled into reloaded ammo on a military Black list. These have all been ordered distoyed and not sold.
He figures that guns are like cars. No fuel no operation. Can't take the guns away so just take away the ammo that is not protected by the constitution.

You might want to check your facts.

Lack of facts have never gotten in the way of a gun debate.
Just ask the Brady Campaign.

But sometimes a particular post on our Forum does help explain why panic buying is sustained long after the rationale runs out.

I voted likely restrictions also, but but am deeply concerned for our rights and what will happen when they force us into socialism and slavery to the state. I for one will not stand for it and I know I'm not alone. Revolution may be right around the corner or decades away but it is coming eventually.

im hoping obama wont freeze up a multi billion dollar industry
but u never know im currently holding gun purchases hoping the craze will die down 7.62 x 39 is 450 dollars per 100 at my local store
