Why are boars always in season in TX?

I think it's because pigs aren't indigenous to North America. You can hunt them all year on private land in FL too.

Quote: "with so many people hunting them all the time, wouldnt that lead to endangerment/extinction in TX?"

While a lot of people may hunt them, that does not necessarily mean that each "hunt" is results in a pig or three. They breed like rabbits - well, not quite, but let's just say they reproduce rather quickly and have migrated to places they did not used to be. And Texas is a big state. Unless some new disease or the like comes along, "endangerment/extinction" not anticipated in my grandchildrens' (which I have none of yet) lifetime.

And BTW, ;) if ya go to the field and mess with the bull, ya get the horns. :D

They are a major nuisance animal and they cause a lot of grief for farmers all over Texas because they basically come in and destroy land and crops.

Sows usually have litters of 8 to 10 hogs (although they can have more) twice a year. That's a lot of hogs!

Frankly, only the hunters and trappers would be upset if they were eradicated.

They're a terrible pest to landowners and cause significant amounts of property damage. They also have an adverse effect on other game animals, including pillaging turkey nests and having a tendency to push deer out of the area.

They are non-game animals in TX. Same category as vermin/varmints.

JohnKSa,

I hunt the boogers but honestly I wouldn't be upset if they were eradicated.

Well, I'd sure be disappointed if I didn't get to pop a couple before they're gone! :D

non-game animal? that explains it then.

Art, that is because of that infernal safety we gave you. I was there and watched it from the nosebleeds (and that huge freaking screen we have). The thing that killed us was that Matt Jones couldn't decide which team he was playing for in the 2nd half.

Honestly, I expected better from a #8 team, but I digress. Damn good rushing defense though.

But you have to admit, that razzle-dazzle was a thing of beauty. :D

Well, it was sigh-of-relief time for me, when the Horns finally won out. I'm less than pleased with their Offensive Coordinator, calling all those pass plays when there's a hoss like Benson, and you're trying to kill the clock.

Jones did a better QB job...No flies on that Hog team, for sure.

Give that the feral hog population in Texas keeps growing (now estimated to exceed 2,000,000), they aren't nearly extinct enough. By contrast, there's an estimated 4,000,000 whitetail deer in Texas.

Feral hogs destroy wild turkey nests like crazy--I read an estimate that 75% of wild turkey eggs are destroyed by feral hogs. They're also murder on quail and any other ground-nesting birds.

There is no season on Feral hogs here in Missouri either. You can hunt them year round and you can bait them. The conservation department wants them eradicated!

My friends in TX call it "Baconism 101".

Errr.. go ahead and find a corn farmer in TX and ask them how they like the boars..

They'll probably reply, "Extra crispy with eggs and toast."

There are LOTS of them.. and they breed quickly.. Extinct? No way..

Pretty much any farmer in Texas from my experience.

I agree with the sentiments expressed so far, that there is no realistic likelyhood of feral hogs being eradicated here, and that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department would be happy if it was completely eradicated.

I for one would like to see just a very small population survive for hunting, but am willing to defer my preference to farmers and gamekeepers.

Question, are there other animals you can't bait?

My buddies are always out with a carton of sour'ed milk (how he times his boar huntin, when the milk in the frig goes bad!!) sour milk and strawberry jello mix..

No season in Georgia. You can hunt with lights at night. On WMA's you can only use the weapons that are required for whatever game is in season. I'm not sure exactly what the firearms are when nothing else is in season.

boars in Texas.

My in-laws use dogs and knives to hunt Boars. Depending on the dog's disposition, some are 'chase' dogs, others are 'catch' dogs. Drop the tail gate on the truck and holler 'hunt' and there is a mad scramble to jump in the back of the truck. The dogs are pit bulls and are friendly to two legged critters. But in a group, just plain hell on four legs to a wild hog.

salty.

So errr..

Come on guys, this is the Hunting Section right?

We are on page two on this thread and..

Not a single boar recipe has been posted yet.

Step it up guys!
