I understand that pyrodex is s BP substitute, but then what is GoEX?

I just called a store to see if they sell BP and the guy told my only pyrodex and GOEX. He does not sell true blackpowder.

I thought GOEX was blackpowder, but I'm new at this.

Goex is a brandname. Blackpowder is a chemical that consists of saltpeter, sulpher, and charcoal in appropriate amounts.
Goex is blackpowder.

Like Crest is toothpaste. Crest is a brand, toothpaste is the product inside.....

But there is Goex Pinnacle powder which is a substitute powder that IIRC is made by American Pioneer Powder (APP).
They also used to produced Goex Clear Shot substitute powder which was discontinued. It was also like APP but made by Goex themselves I believe, but there were some production problems or inconsistencies with it. Some folks reported needing to use a lot more volume of Clear Shot to obtain velocities similar to the other substitutes.

Just to be complete we should also mention that Goex, Inc., which is now owned by Hodgdon's, Inc. also manufactures Goex Express, a more expensive and allegedly higher quality real black powder.

It is confusing when the word Goex is used to refer to both the company itself and just one of it's products, real black powder.

The store clerk that the OP talked to unfortunately exhibited the characteristic that is now becoming all to common amongst retail store clerks - ignorance about his wares. He should have known what the word 'Goex' refers to.

Pyrodex is NOT a substitute.* It is real sulfur, KNO3, Charcoal gunpowder, with a touch of potassium chlorate added to prevent flashing like BP does. That way it can be classified as a flammable solid as opposed to an explosive.

*at least based on my definition of a substitute BP.

I always wondered what the key differences were between black powder and Pyrodex. Now I know. Still it seems strange that the addition of a MUCH more vigorous oxidizer (potassium chlorate) than is potassium nitrate would actually reduce the volatility of the mixture. Strange chemistry going on here.

I'll not get on the pulpet and jus' say buy any real Black Powder, usually it's less expensive...and more consistant with enough poop to it instead of mouse farts...
You'll be happier with the results...

Black powder is getting hard to find.

Pyrodex is a black powder substitute. It comes in two forms; pellets and granular. Pyrodex is a very good and consistent powder: it is also very corrosive, at least as corrosive as black powder. It will rust an uncleaned gun in a day or two. Pyrodex is also a very dirty powder and cleaning the gun is not easy.

Goex Pinnacle is made by APP. It is more powerful than APP or Jim Shockey's Gold. 3F Pinnacle is about the equal of 2F Pyrodex in power. Been using Goex Pinnacle 2F and 3F for over two years almost exclusively. Pinnacle is a good and consistent powder. You may have to refine your loading techniques to get it to work for you. Pinnacle likes a tight fitting sabot that is seated very hard on the powder. Pinnacle cleans up with water.

you can get real black powder at many locations. You have to have an ATF explosive license to sell it and most gunshops dont bother doing that. You can order it online from places like jacks powder keg, main powder house, powder inc, etc...

I walked into a local another shop and they had plenty of the GoEX black powder. Now I live in NJ so I'm sure I over paid at 27.+ for 1 lb, but it has to be cheaper than paying for shipping and hazmat fees.

I'll have to make a run to PA when I run out and need more.

If Pyrodex is such a close cousin to real black powder ....why does it smell like a chemical fire when it burns ?????? I don`t like to use it because of the smell alone ...
I enjoy the smell of real black powder . it`s addicting .
