Why can't I find 7.62x54r ammo

This is the #1 reason to not own a rifle dependant on imported ammo as your main rifle. Had this been a SHTF incident your mosin may have been only a heavy stick.

I disagree. An m44 without ammo is a heavy stick with a 2 foot long pig sticker on the end of it. However, Ive yet to see a case of self defense using a mosin bayonnet.

Unless you already have a crapton of ammo for it ;)

Online is the best way to get it...Wideners, Aim, Ammoman, etc. It's running a little less than $0.20/round now.

The next time you're in Salem, go to:

MLC Exotic Class III‎
1997 25th St SE, Salem, OR
(503) 370-8900‎

They're right behind the K-mart. He has plenty of 7.62x54R.

I would add that it's not as if 7.62x54 isn't still being produced. Whether we see any of that ammo or not might be an issue, but there are still a whole lot of people using PSL's and Mosin's, and they need ammo too.

You can always reload it, if you have to. S&B cases are reasonably cheap, and their 180gn .311 bullet is readily available too.

How much are typical shipping costs for about 440 rounds of x 54R ammo from 'Sportsmansguide' etc?
It has a been a while.
At Ammoman, shipping is included in the price.

I'm sure that during a SHTF situation that you are simply going to walk into a WalMart or gunshop and pick up one of their 10 boxes of ammo on the shelf - so are the other thousand people thinking the same thing. It doesn't matter whether you stock up with domestic or foreign ammo - that is probably all you will have during a SHTF time. Knowing the collectors I know with surplus, there is probably more surplus in my county than there is domestic stuff. The typical firearm owner has only a couple of boxes, the typical surplus owner measures his ammo by the case.

If the "SHTF" today and I ran down to my local Wal Mart I might find 3 or 4 boxes of white box .223.

Unless the SHTF scenario involves zombies, you will probably get by ok with that.

as long as your the only one buying it durring that given ordering and restocking cycle of your local wal-mart

I ran down to Wal-Mart yesterday to get a couple more bricks of .22LR.

The display case glass had been shattered and nothing was on the shelves.
