Why choose a Commander's 1911?

Feel and balance are very subjective. One of my other favorite designs is the S&W "3rd Gen" single-stack 9mm's. I had a couple different 3913's and 3953's and couldn't wait to have a CS9. When I finally got one the overall feel and balance were just a little off for me. When you look at the measurable length, width, height and weight differences between a CS9 and a 3913 they are negligible but feel in the hand to me seemed to be much more pronounced.

To answer your question, the Commander is just one of the many sizes that the 1911 style pistol comes in. It was started in the full-sized , then the Commander, then the Officer. Now they come in every different size in between. It's just what sells. People want more concealable smaller handguns that they can carry without printing and with less weight.
I always liked the Commander size the best for my uses. It shoots as well for me, and carries better.

Being fairly short I find it easier to sit with a commander length gun than I do a Govt. and I give up damn little accuracy going from a Govt to a commander length barrel.
