Picked one up at the gun show Saturday....a Norinco in great shape for $200 including 500 rounds of Silver Bear JHP's. Accurate enough, lots of fun, and not a single malfunction so far. I was having so much fun blasting cans that I worked my way through half of the ammo in a single afternoon.

Proud to be a reformed AR Snob. Now its time to give an AK a chance...

I think a lot of people look down on the SKS because it's cheap and a commie gun...

It's ugly, can't be worth squat because it's so cheap, gah, no detachable magazine, only ten rounds, stupid bayonet ain't worth anything....
Gee, it works and works very well.....even if it was obsolete when introduced, it's still the poor mans MBR. I know - I intend to get one....

I just shot my Yugo SKS for the first time yesterday, and had a blast with it. I was very suprised at how nice it shot. I even made a believer out of a guy who swore he would never get one...now I think he might be thinking about it.

Because if everybody gets one ammo prices will go over $100 a case. That would be a national disaster. Went to the gun show this weekend. Wife and I were walking around looking at all the goodies. Suddenly she wasn't with me any more. Spied her at a table with the check book out. We now have two SKS's.

Armoredman. I have a 30 round detachable mag for my sks and I know they make 5,10,20, round mags. You just pull off the fixed 10 round. I also think it look good with the 30 round mag. Good point the ammo is cheap. Good luck with yours..

The ugly looks is a feature, not a bug... :)

I love mines. One can never have too many SKSs'

Since the Yugo is C&R, it can't be modified, so I am stuck with 10 rounds. That's OK, when I had my long lost beloved Norinco Paratrooper SKS, I got very good with stripper clips.....

I have both a Yugo and Albanian SKS. Yes they are fun and cheap to shoot but my biggest complaint are the V notch rear sights. It is teeny teeny tiny. I wear glasses (bifocals at that) so that may be part of the porblem. But with the tiny V notch and the sight forward of the receiver I do a "hope and pray" when looking downrange. I'm not ready to bale out on my SKSs but that's one area they could be better in.

BTW, does anyone know where I can get a gas piston without the handguard or piston?

Piston without the piston???????????

I don't know what you want, but I'd try Tapco first.

He has 3 laying on his counter right now, they have the guard with them but you can always remove it. Not sure how much he wants for it.

And everyone should know that SKSs are the absolute bottom of the barrel worst rifle you can possibly spend your money on. Please don't buy any and if you already have I'll do you the courtesy of giving you 1/2 of what you paid in order to allow you to rid yourself of such and eyesore while still learning a lesson.

I think it is well nigh impossible to get a gas tube w/o handguard. I'd just buy a zytel one and dremel until I got the tube out. If I found a Yugo handguard and tube, I'd hang onto it.

Did you try the punch that came in your cleaning kit? They're usually ground down that way but if you take the small end of your punch and knock the piss out of it it should push out. If that doesn't help, I have a spare handguard, and like I said, the shop above has 3 gastubes with guards that are each slightly different in color.

Route 66. I have a scope mounted on my sks and it only cost about $40 with the mount. It only takes a few mins to replace the old rec with the one that has the scope mount. I think I got from sportsman guide. With the scope it is deadly at 100 yards.

Route 66 Another option is to change out the rear sight for either a Mojo or Williams peepsight. I prefer the Mojo since the peep-hole is larger, but my buddy prefers the Williams because with a smaller hole, it's easier to be consistant when you are shooting for groups.

Beauty is as beauty does

I started noticing SKSs at gunshops...I really like the profile! I bought a Chicom last Summer from the Pres. of my gunclub....haven't had any malfs
and it loves the cheap Russian ammo. I'm "down" with a $2,000 SA M1A -
after I buy a few 1911's - but this "cheap commie" rifle is a keeper!

Not true. The reason ammo is so cheap for the SKS and AK is because so many people have these gun. Like the 9mm, the more common a cal is, the more companies there are to make it and hence, more competition. We all know that competition often means lower prices for the consumer.

The price of 7.62 is so low that I almost always buy by the case. I go through a lot because I have 8 SKSs (soon to be 9) and a AK. The SKS is the funnest gun to shoot of all the rifles I have had.

The SKS is low priced but it is not cheap. When you look at the quality of a Yugo SKS, it is hard to believe that they are selling for less then $100 at many places. I am a big fan and I will be getting one from every country that made them. N. Korea and E. Germany made them but they have not been imported yet. I am waiting with my Visa for that day.:D
