Why do some guys think that the Desert Eagle is the ultimate handgun?

The only reason I would want a DE is for fun and kicks at the range. Now if I was say...Shaquille O'Neal sized, then maybe it would be a bit more practical :D.

As for the next big hype, I think like another poster mentioned, S&W .500 and remember before DE's became popular the big talk was about Long Slide .45's like an AMT Hardballer and the Wildey Magnum (Death Wish!:neener:).

Williams Gunsite has had one of those fake gold plated DEs at the handgun bench for the last several months...It's like a running joke, with everyone making cracks about what kind of loser would be seen with that thing, as if a 60-ounce pistol isn't joke enough...

I heard a rumor that the DE was designed by Israeli Military Industries to stop terrorist cars. Anyone know if there is any truth to that.

Very unlikely. A rifle in 7.62x51 such as the FAL would be fare more suited in stopping cars then any handgun. Even the 223 will outperform most if not all handguns in this area. Besides a revolver would be easyer to carry.

I had no idea the gun was used in any movies.

I could name at least a dozen movies that the gun is in since it been out.

The gun is a satus item. you could buy a nice gun collection for what one will cost.

Used to know this guy who wanted to be fully licensed to conceal carry a DE in .357 ....... with a suppressor attached. HAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHA!! Too many movies. I'm glad he's gone now.:)

I have a theory. It's not mine, but goes something like this: "The bigger the gun, car, etc., the smaller the..." Well, you know. ;)

BTW, I shoot a .357mag.

I have a Desert Eagle in .44 Magnum which I got because I wanted a semi-auto .44 Magnum and it was the only thing available that I knew I could get parts for over time. I still agree with my decision though I think the LAR Grizzly is a much better gun.
Personally, I think the gun is good for hanging on the wall, silhouette shooting and nothing else. Most of this is due to the fact that the gun has some serious flaws in it's design and MRI apparently is to scared to admit that their product is nothing more then a pretty looking, overpriced junk gun that fires magnum ammo. I will probably trade mine for a S&W 460 once I replace it with another magnum-powered semi-auto.
If you ARE going to get a Desert Eagle, get a .357 Magnum MARK I. I have a friend who has one and it's great. Reasonable size and weight, accurate and has never jammed in over a thousand rounds that I have seen through it. Most of the .50s I've seen in action don't make it through a magazine without jamming half the time.
BTW. If you think the wannabe Desert Eagle owners are bad, wait till you get to know some of the people who actually go out and buy them. Spending $1300 on your ego or desire to be liked says something. Not all, but allot of the people I have come across who have Desert Eagles were total creeps.

Ahhh, but at the time, I don't believe anyone had pistols that shot .308s...

How about 7.62x39?

For years I shot a .357 DE (one of the very early ones) and now have a .44 DE. I couldn't care less what people think about it. I very much enjoy shooting the gun and have found it to be both reliable and dead accurate. I don't own it to show off nor am I a wannabe. I've been shooting for over thirty years and I know what I like and what I don't like. I don't think that it's the ultimate handgun nor do I think that it is anywhere near junk.

I was at the public range yesterday, and about an hour into it two guys show up with a Desert Eagle in .50AE. They set up some jugs of water and attempted to shoot them. At a distance of 25 yards and from a pistol rest, about 5 out of 20 shots made contact--and the plastic jugs were too stout and didn't explode, they just tipped over. They shot their 20 rounds, and then left without picking up their garbage.

They seemed to fit the stereotype of non-gun-enthusiasts who think that this gun will give them instant machismo. They probably thought they looked really cool, but I was embarrassed for/at them.

I do not own one but I have shot one in 50 AE. I can say this it is a heck of a round. I can not stand to shoot the darn thing I shot one five times and every round fired the shell casing hit me in the fore head. I would much rather have a BFR or a smith in 50 S&W Mag.

How about this as the next gun guy's gun a 50 BMG pistol.

ive owned two de's and shot many more... they kick like a mule but if your are wanting the gun for intimidation (in some lines of work thats a plus... better to discourage a fight) they are irreplacable. they are deadly accurate and the worst gun in the world to take apart. im 6'8 and 360lbs and for me the gun was still a pretty good kick but in the tolerable range. The bullets are extremely expensive but the entire reason for carrying was to discourage an encounter, i of course carried a large cap 9mm for backup (shot placement>calibur) but frankly if you need to discourage a gunfight 90% of people that would start something are not gun enthusiasts and are going to think that the huge frame of the desert eagle .50 is going to overpower them no-matter whats in their hand. so the gun does have a purpose and despite whats said... it is damn accurate. but 99% of people have no use for such a gun.

I have an Mk XIX in 50ae and I like it, I have taken deer with mine but it's more of a fun to shoot range toy than anything else.

I just baught mine because I like shooting large magnum handguns, I started shooting a 6" model-29 when I was 10 or 11 and it has stayed with me.

Wow, gun stereotyping:confused: Seems like something I'd expect more from an anti than a shooter.

i'd rather carry a pump shotgun...They are about the same size and weight :neener:

I'm a fan of any gun that's fun to shoot, i'm sure the DE's are fun to shoot

Don't ask me. The only one I can get my short fingers around the grip if is the .357. And that is still uncomfortable. Now my 10mm Dan Wesson....!

I love the baby Desert Eagles (actually they are the same as the Jerico, which is the issue weapon for Isreali police) and they are quite reasonable. They come in 9mm, .40, and .45. From what I can tell they are a nice SA/DA pistol, especially if you have a girlfriend that likes to buy the same guns her people use. I guess I should start saving up for the Uzi now.

While I don't have a Desert Eagle I do have a S&W .50cal that I use on my camping and fishing trips to Alaska. For some reason I sleep better at night in Bear country knowing I have it.

I'm not entirely sure that the Hollywood influence comes from the NUMBER of movies the DE has been in. If that was all there was to it, then everyone would be wanting Walther PPKs. I'm not sure how many Bond movies there are, I stopped watching after "Goldeneye", but I'll take odds on the PPK getting more total screen time than any other auto-loader ever made.

And every time I hear someone refer to them as "Deagles" (Yes, said as Deagle, not as D-Eagle) I have to resist smiling. If poor little Deagal had been armed, maybe Frodo would still be able to count to ten.....

I heard a rumor that the DE was designed by Israeli Military Industries to stop terrorist cars. Anyone know if there is any truth to that.

No. The Israel Military never used the Desert Eagle for their own use. It's contracted out to them by Magnum Research. The "Made in Israel" symbol isn't any different then the famous "Made in China" or "Made in Taiwan" symbols.

The earlier Desert Eagles that I have seen were a total reverse of the newer stuff. They looked more rugged and uninteresting but they shot very well. My Friend has one of them, a .357 Magnum MARK I. I'd love to get my hands on one. Small, almost average size, reliable and well balanced. Not by any means a macho gun though.

I want one in .357 simply because I want a .357 autoloader.

Is that so wrong?

Nope. It's a very good reason. See if you can't find a MARK I though. You'll be a happy camper. A .357 Magnum MARK XIX is WAY too much gun for the bullet though.

I had no idea the gun was used in any movies.

Do a google video search for "Snatch Desert Eagle" (copy and paste) and click on the first video that comes up.
