Why do they call it a cooling off period?

When all it does is piss me off that I can't get my pistol for 10 days!!! I'm not even half way thru the waiting period and I'm getting very anxious. I have some slim grips on order, 2 10 round mags, and 500 rounds of Fioochi and none of it can get here soon enough! I can pick up the P220 Tuesday after 4pm but with our wonderful CA traffic I'll probably pick it up Wed. morning and then try it out!

they call it a cooling off period for several reasons.

For starters they think 10 days will allow any unprocessed paperwork concerning mental and criminal status to get entered into the system and flag you as a "no go" for a gun.

Second, the brady bunch hopes that in the 10 day period, your family will find out you want a gun, and then stage an "intervention" and brainwash you into NOT wanting a firearm. and thus not buy it.

all it does it raise the stress level forus.

What!!!! 10 days waiting but I"m mad now, just kidding but that the ideal about it. We did have a case not too long ago a man was going thur some hard times and guess it got too much for him so he shot his self. Our investigators track his movement he went to a local store waited about 10 mins for it to open went in got a box of .38's went back home and shot his self. Already owned the weapon but needed ammo. Not sure if he didn't have the weapon and had to wait for one if this would of saved his life i think he would of done it in another matter just like if someone is so unstable they want to hurt someone they wouldn't wait for a weapon but fine something they already own to do the deed, like a hammer or an ax.

We have 48hours here. The waiting period actually limits my purchases. There have been several handguns I would have purchased, but I was a bit farther from home than I wanted to drive back to in a few days(or it wasn't practical to do so for other reasons).

Supposedly, people actually go buy a gun when they're PO'd at somebody, with the intention of fixing their little red wagon by shooting them. The "cooling off" period is supposed to let these dangerous, hotheaded rascals "cool off" before they go postal on somebody with their newly-purchased gat.

Here in Colorado, the waiting period is only how long it takes for the 4473 to get processed.

Usually no waiting on long guns as they are less
concealable, whereas with a handgun it makes it
easier for those who may go "Postal." is the thinking

in NJ it is at least 30 days, and up to 180 days. =) Getting a firearms ID is nuts.

It would be more reasonable to me for it to be only as long as it takes to do the background check. Now 30 days is a long time....glad I don't have to do that time! I understand doing a background check but if someone who needs a cooling off period wants to hurt someone they can always find a way!

Oh well it's getting closer now and I should be getting my new grips and mags I ordered sometime today......I'll just fondle them for awhile and maybe it will ease my anxiety!
