"Why do you carry a gun?"...

"As the man rode his bicycle up the sidewalk to avoid a group of 30 to 40 teenagers gathered on North Garfield Avenue, "

Let's see, it's nearly midnight and there are 30 to 40 teenagers hanging out on in the street. What to do, what to do? Ride up on the sidewalk?

U-turn and pedal like hell.

The gun is just the backup.

John

I carry one because I can, just like Feinstein does! I'll turn in my permit to carry right after she hands hers in.

Chris Byrne of http://anarchangel.blogspot.com/ said it well:
The practice of carrying a weapon is a clear assertion that I am a man. By that I'm not talking about macho bull????; By saying I am a man, I mean that I am an adult, responsible for my actions, and willing to accept the consequences of them. When you carry a gun you have in your hands (or on your hip), the ability to end any mans life. This is a massive responsibility, second only to that of raising children. Many people are uncomfortable with that responsiblity. They believe that they can't be trusted with it, and by extension, neither can anyone else. They fall back on saying "the police" or "the government" should take care of that. Someone with special training, and the blessings of the state should be responsible, but not me, or you, or anyone else. I can think of no clearer way of saying "I am immature, and not to be trusted". When I carry a gun, I accept the fact that I may kill someone. I don't ever plan on doing it, I hope it doesn't happen, but it may. I am prepared for this possiblity, and I accept the consequences should it happen. A few months ago, I broke up with a girlfriend over this. She asked me what I would do to someone if they tried to rape her. I told her flat out that I would kill him. No hesitation there at all. She told me later that from that moment, she was afraid of me. I asked her what she would do if someone tried to rape her. She said she wouldnt fight. "What if you had a gun, would you shoot the guy to stop it", no she wouldnt do that. "ok what if I was there and I shot him, would that be OK", no of course not. Finally I asked "What if a cop came along, and he shot the guy would that be ok" well of course, he's a cop. That attitude frankly baffles, and disgusts me, yet there are so many people who hold it. They feel morally superior because they would never "sink to that level". Personally I would consider that pretty clear evidence of moral bankruptcy. The same applies to people who would never fight in a war, but are OK with soldiers and cops defending their rights. Oh, they'll protest, and march in the streets, but actually doing anything? No they're all above that and have disdain for everyone else who isn't, calling us savages, and rednecks, and barbarians etc... I carry a gun because it is my right, and because I am responsible enough to excercise it. I feel nothing but pity or contempt for those who are not.

I always quote Jeff Cooper's answer when people ask me why do I carry a gun. "Because I choose to". And add that I have a valid permit to carry said gun!

I dont carry because I cant.

If I could, it'd be because people are f'in crazy these days. I mean bizarro random stuff happens to people all the time. A guy here was stabbed do death by a bum a few months back. All the guy did was confront the bum because he was releiving himself on the guy's house. I cant help but think, "if that guy had a gun, he might be alive"

My business card used to carry the words "Licensed * Bonded * Insured* Armed." I'd give them to attorneys. Didn't seem to hurt, although one Austin lawyer asked me, "Armed? Are you serious?"

"Yes, ma'am," I answered, "serious as a heart attack."

Star Tribune Story

Yup-- that is exactly the sort of story I am talking about...

"Police said the suspects demanded the mother's purse. She obliged and there was no struggle or resistance, but one suspect then shot the man, police said.

Robberies have increased 39 percent citywide in the first 2½ months of 2006 compared with the same time last year, according to statistics released last week. There were 100 robberies reported in the Fifth Precinct this year compared with 60 at this time last year, Arneson said. A robbery task force is investigating the crimes, and patrols have been stepped up, she said.

Safety tips from police include traveling in groups, parking in lighted areas, carrying a cell phone, avoiding intoxication and not fighting back."

----------------------------------------------

Nice "safety tips", eh? "Not fighting back", and the guy got shot anyway! Avoid trouble if possible, sure-- but sometimes the trouble comes to you regardless. Again, not one word on the option of self-defense... Is that a taboo in the media, or what? Afraid of law suits? Another subject for discussion, I guess... ;)

Good posts, all, thanks!

...And I am going to keep the "zombies" and "rocket launcher" answers in mind for certain obnoxious people I know... :D

I'd rather deal with the legal system than deal with a bullet in my melon, like the poor sot in Minneapolis is trying to do right now.

Hey Iggy,

I like the idea about the card, though since I live behind enema lines in Illinois, and couldn't carry a gun to save my life (which it might), I think that I'll have a card made up that says;

"If you are reading this, then I am dead. If I was the victim of violence, the 2 individuals indirectly responsible for my death are Mayor Richard Daley, and Governor Rod Blagojavich. Because of their relentless assault on the 2nd Amendment, and their inane belief that the common man should be incapable of protecting his life and the lives of his family, I was left defensless against those with ill-intentions."

I like the idea of saying "Because my rocket launcher is too heavy:D ." I usually say "It's a good pre-cautionary measure." or "The same reason you are probably going to where a seat belt & lock your door when you go home tonight."

Let me see, Why do I carry a gun? Well, Matthew Shepard. The Westboro Baptist Church,

How about because I can?

No? Ok then, I carry a gun in case I get a flat tire. ;)

anybody that asks that question after hearing about the california dennys shootings is probably not going to bother understanding your answer anyway.

Why I CCW.....

35 years ago (I was 22 years old), I never locked my front door or my car/pickup and sometime I even left the keys in the ignition. Anyone from a rural area can make that same claim. Although I owned guns at that time, I would have considered it a nusance to carry any of them all the time. At that age and at that time I could have handled a majority of the the bad guys of THAT era; hand to hand.

But today things have changed. The average bad guy of THIS era has changed. They are ferrel animals. They have no respect for life or property. A gun is standard issue with them. Killing seems to be a hobby for them.

The state of California has chosen to build and populate three major establishments of incarceration, within 20 miles of my front door. My wife and I now keep our doors locked 24/7. Both of our vehicles have alarm systems.

I could state the same reasons as some other already have:

"I'm an American" (I am)
"Because I Can" (and I can....legally)
"It's my right" (some places in our country that doesn't seem to be true anymore)

But I carry because I feel that I really need to. To really protect myself, my wife, my kids and my grandkids. I wish I didn't need to carry. I probably wouldn't.

Just some thoughts.

Because I do not have enough money to hire a 100% duty cycle body guard (or two or more part time) which would be necessary to make the odds more even.

When dealing with a non-gunnie on this issue, I like to put it in terms to which they can relate.

EVERYBODY understands "insurance".

"Have you ever had your house burn?" "No." "Got insurance?" "Yeah." "Odds are, you won't really need it, right? But you have it." "Yeah."

"Ever had a major car wreck?" "No." "Got insurance?" "Yeah." "Odds are, you probably won't really need it, right? But you have it." "Yeah."

And so on. Then, "Well, my pistol is just another form of insurance, and, like your insurance, I figure needing it would be a rare event--so I have it."

It's surprising how many people get a thoughtful look after that little exchange. Think about this: Nowhere was I macho. Nowhere did I use "buzz words". Talking in THEIR dictionary, they could understand emotionally as well as intellectually.

"Why do you carry a gun?"

"Have you ever had your house burn?"
"Yes."
"Got insurance?"
"No."
"Odds are, you won't really need it again, right? But you have it now?"
"No."

"Umm... ok. Ah! Ever had a major car wreck?"
"Yes."
"Got insurance?"
"No."
"But you have it now, right?"
"Nope."

"Err... because I can, dangit!"
