Why don't we ever factor this in when talking about ARs?

i still can't figure out what you're saying, Jim

they want HP
SMK is nasty wounding, but sierra recommends not hunting with them
VLD bullets are killers as determined by hunters on game
but entirely different than SMK

?

you keep switching back and forth between talking about the profile and the point of the bullet. has there been some study done on wounding of VLD vs non-VLD? i don't think i've ever heard of the profile having much to do with it.

Sorry to confuse you.
Subject 1: A "match" hollowpoint is still a hollowpoint. Even though not intentionally built for expansion, it is likely to do more damage to an enemy than a FMJ.

Subject 2: Some reports are that the VLD profile J4 jacket hollowpoints behave in a more predictable way that makes them suitable game bullets as SMKs are not. Maybe that would make them better antipersonnel bullets.

I don't think the guys using Mk 262 in 14" barrelled M4s and well-worn M16s are thinking about accuracy. They want hollowpoints that break up in the manner that leads Sierra to recommend against hunting with them.

And who are these mythical guys we're talking about? There's much, much, much less Mk 262 ammo out there in the hands of the troops than the internet claims. Most everyone, even in SOF units, is still using plain old green tip.

A "match" hollowpoint is still a hollowpoint.

Not really. A match hollow point with an opening about the size of a mechanical pencil lead and no hollowing out of the lead beneath is not much of a hollow point at all. In point of fact, it is specifically legally not defined as such.

Even though not intentionally built for expansion, it is likely to do more damage to an enemy than a FMJ.

It doesn't expand at all. The only boost in terminal ballistics from the OTM Mk 262 or M118LR is that it fragments at lower speeds (or fragments at all in the case of the 118LR compared to M80 ball in most circumstances).

OK wrong convention, but still used even in civilian use LEO. It the
multiple hit per round (pretty close up and personal) that ruin their day.
Choices of shot sizes or slugs. Nope, would not want to hump a 50 either,
as I did that with a lighter BAR that wasn't a whole bunch better swapping
out for a 60. Saw some film with a Canadian team with no battle gear
shooting at sometimes 2000 yards that hits were very impressive to say
the least. Believe me when I say that a double tap was not needed and
not a bunch of target left. A friend told me of simular on U tube that could
be the same. Looks to be a three man team vs our two.
I doubt very much there are 1 in 14 barrel in use in sand country or
any use military any more. Agree with you Jim on comments on bullets.:D
