Why I have guns.

As I read the First post I realized that it was gonna be like stirring an ant nest with a stick! The OP has almost 300 posts and at a glance, they look typical and non-inflammatory, so I'll certainly give him the benifit of the doubt.

Not every gun owner has the 2A at their most important issue to them; and we live in a country that still allows a very wide range of views and opinions. I'm Glad we have all the responsible gun owners that we do, and that we're plentiful enough to make ourselves heard.

So... I own some guns as tools: my grandpas shotgun for hunting & shooting clays, a handful of handguns for EDC or home protection. But the majority of them I just own for the enjoyment of shooting them and doing some amateur gunsmithing. Kinda like trying to play the banjo, or singing in a gospel quartet. Just for the fun, fellowship & challenge each brings.

To the OP, All of your guns may be toys forever. I hope mine are too. I love to shoot, and collect, and trade. Its been my favorite hobby for just about 5 years now. I don't particularly think of them of weapons, because I too have never had to, or wanted to, use one in a malicious way. But I will say that all of that shooting and training is not for nigh. I'd bet my bottom dollar that if you heard a real bump in the night your first thought would be "where's my gun". So while you don't buy them, or even keep them around for self defense. You'll certainly use one in that way if the need be.

Why for me?

I have two classes of rifles.

Fun class and protection class.

I have some high end .22's and a bolt .223 for precision shooting at the range. That is the fun class.

The other class is for the protection of my family and myself.
So far, I have the right to do so and I will exercise that right.

Please remember the first thing a totalitarian government will do is to preserve its grip on control of the populace and one sure way to do that is to confiscate its weapons.

The first thing a tyrannical government will do is control the media. Once it has control of the media, it will then impose its will on the populace and that will inevitably lead to the confiscation of all weapons. Then, it will impose martial law, and monitor every thing you do.

If you are on board with their program, you will live. If you are not on board with their program, you will either have to flee, or be imprisoned, or you will die fighting in opposition.

It's seriously scary how close the USA is to currently being under the total control of a completely corrupt federal bureaucracy (with the states continuously ceding power to DC). The MSM is either complacent with, or apathetic to, corruption and exposing the truth, and the general population (for the most part) is either completely ignorant and apathetic, or tacitly supporting a new world order.

If the second amendment, pro or con, is a big part of your life I wonder if you have much of a life.

How about if the 1st amendment is a big part of my life? That's the one that says the government can't tell me if/how I should worship.

How about if the 4th one is a big part of my life? That's the one that says the government can't barge into my house and look through my stuff, and that it has to have probable cause to stop and search me among other things.

How about if the fifth one is a big part of my life? That one says a bunch...like they can't try me for the same offense more than once, or that they can't deprive me of my life, liberty or happiness without the due process of law.

I could keep going but you should be getting the point by now. They are all a "big part of my life." Without those amendments we'd be just another third-world republic, chock full of all the human rights abuses and political oppression that comes with that territory.

In closing I'd ask that you either quit trolling, or go read the Bill of Rights and make an effort to understand how that document shapes the freedoms you operate with on a daily basis.

Cutting trees down with a shotgun. Reminds me of a congress critter that said he hunted deer by Crawling on the ground. Sounds like the OP is confused about the meaning of the 2A.

I own guns because....

it makes a segment of the population angry by doing so.

Well, and I like have the luxury of an adequate personal protection item.
I also appreciate the fine metal workings that go into them.
If the grocery store breaks, I can kill stuff to eat.

It IS a big part of my life.

So is the first amendment, the third, and fourth, come to think of it the whole Constitution/Bill of Rights is a big part of my life.
Up until recently it meant something to our government as well, but that seems to be changing rapidly.

Maybe I should spend my life on more important things - like golfing, or who owns the most expensive car on the block. Could even take up snake dancing or perhaps watching porn ?

Naw - I quess freedom is just got under my skin.

I figure that Im not too far removed from the caveman who picked up a rock and threw it at something...and then afterwards thought to himself, "how can I make this rock go farther, faster and straighter".
Me troglodyte with boom stick!

They also make a great investment as a hedge against inflation

I have them for many reasons.

1) Because it's my right
2) Because they're fun to shoot
3) Because they force me to focus at the range and forget my day
4) Because I can meet a lot of great, like-minded people
5) Because I CAN

Yes, I carry for self defense. I have guns. I have firearms. I don't have weapons... well, two I consider weapons considering they were WWII surplus, I'm confident that they've been used against humans, but the reason I have them is HISTORY. Guns win wars... those guns (or others like it) have helped form the world the way it is.

And that's why *I* own guns.

The more gun owners, the better, because the tyrants take note of the number of gun owners. I am happy to be a gun owner specifically for that reason. I feel I'm doing my part. Potential invaders also look at the number of gun owners the US has. I served my country in the military and am more than willing to repeat that as an armed citizen.

After I looked at that post I decided that parts of it weren't worded as I meant them. Some of you expressed some of them better than I did. I am pained by people that act like the 2nd admendment is the bulk of our wonderful constitution which gaurantees us many rights and freedoms. After I reread my post I realized that it sounded like I was talking about people actively, physically waving guns in others' faces. What I was thinking about was the crowd that gets up in other peoples' faces about gun rights. HOWEVER I don't believe we ought to give an inch. They will take a mile. I know a lot of people come to gun forums to brag with their guns' supposed performance and to list their collections in their signature line. My guns are all toys. I have heard shots fired in anger. I am 100% disabled from combat service. I know what can be done with guns. But my guns ARE toys. If you want to tell me they are not, you will join the list of people I should have shot but did not. Maybe there are a lott of progun people who see blowhards in defense of the 2nd as actually being detrimental to our cause. I think we should more often espouse the feeling that we just love and want guns. I really don't feel threatened, I will hunt very little the rest of my life andI just go to the range to plink. If I get a strong urge to buy another gun, I will.

It seems to me that people seldom mention the reason I own guns. I don't own them for self defense or to protect my stuff. Most of them I don't hunt with. Sometimes I do encounter a varmint that needs shooting. I have had neighbors that needed shooting but I don't do that. I trade and shoot guns because I like to. If the second amendment, pro or con, is a big part of your life I wonder if you have much of a life. I liked hearing Joe Biden say everyone needs a shotgun. I celebrated by buying me a new one. I bought lots of guns cause they were cute. All my guns are toys. They are not tools although I once cut down a Christmas tree with a 16 ga double side by side. I don't call any of them weapons because that indicates TO ME use against people. I just own my guns because I own them and like them. I don't know why someone would not trust me to own guns. I also don't know why people who do own them wave them around and stick them in other peoples face.

Hmmm... See the problem?

I have spent nearly my whole adult life (I'm 67) fighting in one way or another to keep the 2nd amendment from being butt wipe to the anti-gun eliments in our society and our government.

I can't think of another amendment in the bill of rights that has needed the time, effort, and money that has been spent to prevent it from being attack with such relentlace furver.

I would be so pleased to not have to make the 2nd as much of my life as it is.

If the need arises for you to defend the life of yourself or your loved ones, are you going to use a "toy" or a weapon to do so?

You can play semantics all you want, call your guns your "toys" or "sweeties" or "snugglybears" or whatever. Bottom line is that they are still guns and can be used for whatever purpose is necessary.

Put me on your list of people to shoot. But be aware that threatening to shoot people with your "toys" is NOT a joking matter.

Guns are not toys and, your comment as to making a list of people you should have shot but did not is not only unconscionable but should be reported. People who claim to make lists of people to shoot are emotionally unstable and should not have firearms and should not be permitted to post.

Im sure he only meant "toy" in that he has never intended any of them for any serious use. Something that is fun, but not necessary.
And a "list of people" has to've been a rhetorical off the cuff statement.
If a physical list is what were made, i doubt he'd've made a post about it.
Its just a saying....like, "some people are only alive because its illegal to kill them". Its not serious, but gets the point across.

Sorry olaf for putting words in your mouth....just interpreting as I understand it. I sympathize with your position, but disagree with it. Guns are a blast, but to contend that there is not a serious business and responsibility that goes in tow with them is maybe a little narrow minded.
Human nature is what it is, and i like being prepared to defend me and mine, if and when some pissant decides that his goals are worth more than a life.

This is going nowhere good, and things like....
If you want to tell me they are not, you will join the list of people I should have shot but did not.
have no place on THR.
