I did a search for threads about AK's but there wasn't much there in terms of a comprehensive thread so I wanted to start one for all the AK guys, who seem to be a distinct minority here in terms of SA rifles. This is for us, fans of the AK, and no others. Legitimate criticisms welcomed, but, THIS AIN'T AN AK VS AR DISCUSSION!

I have really grown to enjoy these rifles and have found virtually all the myths about them to be false. When I spent time with one I realized just why this is the most popular mass produced semi auto rifle of the modern era. As time has passed I have even learned to love it's "deficiencies" and work around or correct them altogether. Here goes:

I hated the irons, a little dedication and practice and I found that, though a bit crude, they are about all you need in a fighting oriented weapon. Yes, most sporter type rifles have nicer irons but in terms of what it was designed for they work as well as any. They still aren't my favorite irons but I can use them as effectively as my favorites at the distances I encounter, out to about 200 yards.

The weight. Not as light as some, not as heavy as others, but still extremely handy as they are carbine length. They are reasonably quick to shoulder. You can get on target with plenty of speed. Yet the rifle still feels like a solid, sturdy piece of equipment.

Ease of use. It's a very basic layout, nothing fancy in stock form. Women and children have no trouble understanding the principles of operation after ten or fifteen minutes of instruction. This is big for me because one rifle can serve many. I have taken a youth of grade school age, who had never fired a weapon at all, ran through the basics, and he was able to make hits at 50 and 100 yards on 15" by 15" steels without much difficulty. Biggest complaint for him was the trigger slap, which for a little guy was a bit uncomfortable. Now I understand why child armies are possible.

Accuracy. Yep, accuracy. All the myths of the inaccurate AK have been dispelled for me. Sure, there are junk builds, worn out rifles, and horrible shooters that will cause it to live up to it's inaccurate reputation but I've yet to see a quality build that will shoot much worse than 3MOA with a competent shooter behind it. The AK-74 guys have shown 1.5 and 2 MOA groups pretty regularly. For what it's designed for, it's more than accurate enough. I see little difference during rapid aimed fire with other rifles when both targets come back with a huge hole in the center. Mission accomplished.

Reliability. After doing a couple builds and rebuilds which had me pulling my hair out trying to get surplus mags to feed correctly, gas systems tuned, and a variety of ammo to feed it was nice to know I could order a box of surplus mags, never test them, and have the gun run like a top when I finally loaded them up for the range. I had incredibly bad luck with surplus FAL mags, not to say it's a certainty, but at the point I bought an AK it was a serious relief to not have to dink around with mags.

To me the AK magazine is the other half of the genius of this design. Incredibly tough, plentiful, and affordable. I've yet to have a single misfeed with a surplus AK-47 mag. And the gun feeds anything; cheap steel case, high dollar brass, hollowpoints, fmj, and even soft points.

Cost. Yes, the cost of AK's is on the rise due to increased demand. But I also think people are coming around and seeing the beauty of this design. I am not a fan of Russian rifles at all, but there is something special in the AK. You can get a great rifle for fairly reasonable though I would only purchase a cheap build (read Century) if I could examine it myself first. And the working class man can afford to shoot this every weekend with the cheap steel case Wolf/Tula/Golden Tiger ammo. Major plus for me, cause I like to shoot.

Maintenance. What maintenance? I hate cleaning guns, I like to shoot. This thing is easy to clean and can be oiled with just about anything greasy. If you don't have something greasy don't worry about it. Five or six hundred rounds or more between cleanings is nothing to sweat about, though I do usually wipe down the gas piston, mostly to keep it shiny, lol.

Accessories. The aftermarket accessories market seems to have exploded. No, it can't touch the AR world in terms of variety, none can, but it is growing very fast. There are all sorts of aftermarket goodies that correct some complaints, such as the safety lever, charging handle location, etc. I have no problems with these things after some time spent on the range with it but it sure was nice to find a good mount to co-witness a red dot with. My future plans include a six position adjustable stock because that Warsaw length job is just a bit too short for a man over six feet in height in some shooting situations.

I would seriously recommend those who have been fence sitting or semi-interested to give this rifle a try. All the things listed have made this my favorite general purpose rifle in my safe far and away. I used to prefer other weapons, no longer.

So, AK guys, why do you love your AK?

I love my Ak because after 2200 rnds fired from my polish tantal i have yet to have one misfire or jam, i can consistantly get 25-30 out of 30 on a silhouette out to 300m with irons, and theres just something to be said about a weapon that you can oil and pour sand thru and still have function and reliability ( and yes i have done this) And theres just that rebellious side of most of us that just wants a AK platform because its very against the norm.

I have always been a AR guy, I only bought a AK because I had a chance to find one cheap (this was back in 2011). It was one of the first Zastava PAP's and was as homely as a mud fence.

After substantially changing the way it looks and converting to double stack magazines it has become one of my favorite rifles to plink with. Yes it won't shoot tiny groups at 300 yards, but it will hit with combat accuracy at that distance and it is as reliable as a rock. No matter what, it goes bang and is absolutely not ammo sensitive. I might add that I never shoot off a rest, I like to stand on my feet and work on hitting my target from the offhand position.

Most of all it is just fun to shoot.

I appreciate the AK for what it is: a simple to use, reliable, robust, and ergonomic*, rifle.

It's not a particularly accurate rifle, and should not be messed around with trying to make it what it's not.

BSW

*All the controls are simple, intuitive, and located in easy reach of the right hand. Comparatively, an AR is like playing a piano, everything spread out and something for both hands to do.

I bought my first AK (a Romainan SAR 1) when I was 16, and went through several of them. It was a great choice for a teenager who was new to guns and who had no idea about the quality differences between various manufacturers, mag issues, ammo issues, etc. that you deal with on other types of rifles.

An AK is one of those weapons for which you can get one of the cheaper variants and throw any old cheap steel cased ammo in any old surplus mag in it, and it will still work reliably. Great gun for a noob.

It kind of spoiled me... when I bought my first AR, I got a cheap non mil spec version, a crappy Israeli mag, and shot Wolf steel case out of it and of course it wasn't particularly reliable. This comported with the rumors that were popular in those days about how unreliable all ARs are, and I believed that stuff for a long while.

I think AKs make great 2A purpose guns, and truck/trunk guns. I don't currently have any... they have been supplanted by ARs in my arsenal... But I would like to get another one someday.

Bulgarian Arsenal SAM7 and SLR-105, a few Saigas in all the calibers, even an older Romanian SAR-1

...loved them all.

Did you also watch the Youtube video on the "brandon401401" Channel?

The video where he holds his WASR in a free stance and hits gongs at 200+ yards?
That rifle has a slightly modified trigger, but he is a regular excellent shot in various parts of his Channel.

Careful, you might be stepping on some 'oh so delicate' AR toes....

I've taken my AKS-74 through several rifle classes now, and it has never left me wanting, shooting shoulder-to-shoulder with (against?) ARs with optics. It works very well, is plenty accurate for that task, and has never left me in an apologetic discussion with the instructor about, "maybe it needs the black spring and the purple O-ring, or maybe it's overgassed, or undergassed, or maybe my ammo isn't powerful enough, or maybe I should have bought the DD instead of the Colt... " and all those other diagnostic discussions that seem to take up part of each training session. ;)

I'll be shooting it in a multi-gun match tomorrow! :)

It s good that there s more praises for the AK 47 and the SKS as a whole. Why? Bec the ammo surplus is still affordable. People are dogtired of spending too much on 5.56 when they can get the 7.62 or 5.45 at half the price. Economics dictate the shift in people's buying habits.

Thanks for the praises . im sure there will be more converts especially those ARs folks to AKs.

Mine has never given me any problems, ever. If you get a quality AK, you're gonna be fine. To me, this is the best point of the AK... 100% reliability, no matter what.

ive got pretty much atleast 1 in each caliber flavor: .223, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, .308, 12 guage... milled and stamped... Century and custom made and converted by my 2 hands... and I love em all... i dont have a .22 but may get a Romanian one next year...

Wow, you did a nice job on that rifle. It looks fantastic!

I might've seen it. I probably watched every youtube video about AK's when I was making the decision between an AR and an AK. Cokeman's comparison is what convinced me to go with an AK series, though I chose a 47 over the 74 for ammo costs and the 7.62's ballistics. It just seemed like it fit my wants and needs more. I was on the verge of buying a really nice AR. I would have an AR now as well but I don't have the money for both rifles, plus 10 or 20 mags each, plus ammo, plus some spares. It had to be one or the other. I've almost started an AR build just because they are so common it's hard to know other gun guys and not have someone with a complete or at least the lower for sale at any given time. Tempting, but I'm set in the AK now. I'm happy enough that I have turned down several AR deals I could've quite easily justified considering the low pricing.

Strangely, after I decided to go AK I started reading up on the CZ58 and Galil type rifles and was getting ready to spring for a Czechpoint (Galil's are scarce) when a very high quality AK crossed my path for a really reasonable price. Glad I did in the end for mag availability, parts, and aftermarket accessories.

That was part of my problem with messing with builds. It's great if you have a range out back or nearby that doesn't cost $ and you can quickly and easily test modifications or changes but it's too time consuming to work out minor details only to get to a range to find something else was problematic and guess what? Can't go test it again for another week or two (and another $20). My tinkering days are over until I move back out to the country and have a range out the back door.

That rifle looks lean and mean. I have a MI handguard on mine that's awaiting an Aimpoint. I really wanted two things on the gun that I haven't had/been able to have on my other rifles; a co-witnessing red dot of high quality and an AFG. Almost there.:)

Living out in the country you need certain things. Around here you can run into cougars, bears, boar, or the buck in rutting season who doesn't appreciate your presence( my basset hound walked me into one once, after grabbing her we both barely made it over a fence) so a rifle that is simple and reliable is a must have. I've got ARs, but my AK in 7.62x39 is my "walk the property" and "always loaded" go to rifle. It either has 122gr hp or 154gr sp ammo in the mag. With a stamped receiver and polymer hardware it's within a few ounces of my ARs. It has went through 4000 rounds without a failure. One of my ARs has about the same round count without failure so I can't say one is more reliable than the other. It could be that both are very well cleaned and oiled, go figure.

My ARs are nice but I just don't feel as confident about them as my AK. I read a recent story about a hiker using an AK in 5.45x39 on a bear that attacked him, the round count was in the double digits before the bear was stopped. It would probably have been the same outcome with .223/5.56 as they are about the same power level. Most of the AK vs AR argument is usually by people who own one or the other. They both have strong and weak points. Both designs are over 50 years old now believe it or not. I love both designs and I'm glad that I didn't listen to either side of AR or AK hate patrol.

Great thread, guys, keep it going! I've never shot an AK (and I'm not an AR guy, either), but you guys have got me to thinking....

Used to work with a guy that was ex army. One day he ask me if I had to bug out, which one of my rifles would I take. I told him, simple, my AK-47. Then he went off into a rant about AK's being useless, inaccurate pieces of junk. I ask him why he felt that way, he pulls up his pant leg and shows me a serious looking scar above his knee. Said while in the sandbox, he was hit by a round from one. My last question was if he kept fighting after he was hit. His answer was the same as my reason, NO. Aside from that, first hand accounts are out about doped up enemy fighters receiving multiple 5.56 hits and still fighting. I will need to research whether or not there are stories of enemy fighters continuing after being hit with 7.62x39 rounds.

Yes.
Years ago an evangelist at my church described taking several AK rounds from a VC who popped up from a spider hole. The speaker killed Charlie with his M16 before going down.

You tell me what you'd rather get hit by.

AK seems to just tumble forever, behaving much like a pistol FMJ.
While AR will fragment and make a nice hole in the bad guy.

Obviously there are different loads, but this is with the most common ammunition (m193 and m855 for AR). Unless you buy premium AK hollowpoints ($1.00+ per round) the regular AK hollowpoints don't even expand and do the same tumbling crap for 30 inches. Can't be beat for the price though.

Getting hit by any of those looks pretty terrible to me.

I own a 7.62x39mm Saiga AK that I converted myself and absolutely love. It's light, simple, reliable, and accurate (easily a 2-2.5 MOA rifle with decent ammo). However, if I were going into battle, I'd have a hard time turning down a good AR. The ergonomics of the AR platform are a complete win for me, and in my experience, a good AR is a damn reliable rifle.

After I overcame the initial impressions - and learned to use the weapon - I fell in love with the AK in it's many variants....

The "he got hit with" and kept fighting or went down... it's all nonsense. The combination of luck, distance, where hit, quality of powder, angle, and again dumb luck. We all know that bullets behave oddly.

That said, all things considered, a .30 caliber makes a bigger deeper hole...
