Why I'm Armed: The Latest Family Slaughter

This article does not provide very many details, but it doesn't sound too good. Hopefully the Texas courts will take care of the offenders, but its still scary to hear about these things happening, especially in rural areas. I hate hearing about acts of violence like this, but its a good example and reminder of the evil in this world that we need to protect ourselves and our families from.

Hey Doc,

That article was buried deep in A section in the Washington Post this morning. I found it chilling to read.

Semper Paratus....

Reading this just reinforces why we must be prepared. The article noted that there is a teenage girl in the family. It will be interesting to see if she is also a victim of this rampage or had something to do with it.

Family Killed in Texas; 4 Youths Held

By PAUL J. WEBER

ALBA, Texas (AP) - A mother and two children were killed in a predawn attack at their remote East Texas ranch, which burned to the ground, and four young people who knew the family will be charged with murder, authorities said.

The father was in critical condition with a gunshot wound, Rains County Sheriff David Traylor said at a news conference.

Three high school students and a juvenile were arrested and booked into the Rains County jail. The two males and two females will be charged with three counts each of capital murder, Traylor said.

The family had a teenage daughter, but Traylor did not provide information on her whereabouts. The dead were a 39-year-old woman and two boys, ages 8 and 13, Traylor said.

"It's the scariest thing," Traylor said. "You don't know what to make. I guess you imagine the worst and hope for the best."

Authorities were tightlipped on details, but Traylor said autopsies have been ordered.

The house sat on at least 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote land on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes, Traylor said. Alba is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas.

......

The cynic in me wants to place money on the daughter being in on planning a 'robbery/home invasion' that went wrong....

Lots and lots of meth problems out thataway....

Awful. What the hell is the world comin' to...

Being armed may not have helped in this one, if the little slugs torched the house with the family asleep inside. That's why, even with the pistol in the nightstand and the shotgun over the door...I still like to have a mouthy dog or three on patrol inside the house at night.

Awful...

This just in from CNN:

ALBA, Texas (AP) -- A family's opposition to a teenage daughter's romance is suspected of leading to a fiery attack that left the girl's mother and brothers dead and her father critically wounded, investigators said Sunday.
....
Four suspects, including the 16-year-old daughter, remained in custody on capital murder charges Sunday, a day after the pre-dawn attack on the rural East Texas home of Terry and Penny Caffey.

Terry Caffey, who was shot in the head, was able to crawl about 300 yards to a neighbor's house to seek help, while flames consumed his home with his wife and two young sons inside, the Rains County Sheriff's Department said.

Penny Caffey, 37; Tyler Caffey, 8; and Mathew Caffey, 13, had been shot and stabbed multiple times, according to the statement.

So it wasn't meth - it was over a boy.

its curious when you think about it. Scenarios that come up first off are grudge killing aimed at the mysteriously absent teenage girl. Then possibly a "kill the family so buffy can marry stewie" type deal.

Shows why even a retarded beagle can be good to have around.

I agree with Tuner, get a dog, make it an integral part of your family. Treat like it was one of your kids. It will pay you back a hundredfold.

..I still like to have a mouthy dog or three on patrol inside the house at night.
Dang right.

Double danged right.

We watched Leave it to Beaver etc.. They are watching trash for the most part. Simple pitiful.

My little mutt is kind of mean to everyone but me but he sure is a vigilant little fellow. Any noise or movement outside the house sets him off and he constantly scares the pizza guy and the UPS guy. He's never more than 3 feet from me when I'm in the house, and yes, he's treated as well as any of my kids. You can't buy loyalty or protection as reliable as the old dog...

Back in my day (which was a long time ago) the girl would have simply eloped with the boy and then spend the rest of her life regretting it. But today it seems more reasonable to these children to just wipe out their families. This sort of report is all too common. We have indeed raised a generation of vipers.

I agree with the comments about a dog, but wonder - would one have made a fuss if a family member was involved? Apparently this situation involves a daughter who was willing to kill her father, mother, and younger brothers. In such a case regular solutions and precautions might not work.

No, I don't have any better answers...

Can't speak for anybody else's dog, but mine cut loose whenever anybody comes down the private road to the house, and they don't let up until they're satisfied that they're okay to be there...and that includes me, even when they know it's me. Once I'm in the house, though...they settle down.

Probably wouldn't have made a difference in this case one way or another. Kid comes in with a gang of friends...who expects'em to do a thing like this. The rest of the family would have been caught with their pants around their ankles, even if they'd known they were there.

Owlhoot. We surely have...or at least some people have.

Yeah, my parents dog will bark if anyone comes around that he doesn't know. It doesn't always matter if they are with someone they do know.

Keep a long gun with a tactical light, and if anyone intrudes onto your property esp. at night keep it leveled at them.

Those who would blame TV, video games or "kids today" don't know enough about history. This sort of thing has been happening all along. Be prepared or be dead.

That's not been my experience. Both me and my ex held off potential nogoodnicks out in the wild north with lighted long guns. The classroom theory is it's easy to shoot at a tactical light. In reality it gives you enormous advantage, and with a long gun you can blow their heads off if they go for iron. I felt pretty dang secure, at any rate, and still do. But then again this is a PURELY DEFENSIVE application. If you're on the offensive like a cop or soldier a tactical light giving your position away may not be such a good idea. For defending a rural homestead, the lighted long gun is part of a package deal along with the dogs, signs and a verbal warning to get the @#%#! out of there post haste. When dealing with some drunk nogoodnicks in an oversized pickup looking for trouble, you don't want any ambiguity. A blinding light tends to back them down. Worked for me anyway.

Wendys Palm Beach, FL.this afternoon

There was another one in a wendys in Palm Beach, 4 or 5 shot, 2 dead, some guy just walked in and opened up, it's on my local news.

Depends on the dog, my rotties, were naturally protective, didn't have to learn anything, also my wife's Lab, that one was as smart as they come, but my 6yr old Lab, now I don't know what she would do, but if she hears anything, she goes to code red which is all I need. Folks always used to ask me, with my Rotties, got him for protection? and I would say, no he has me for that.

Ugly episodes such as this and the heinous murders of the Petit family of Cheshire, CT seem to be on the rise in small and medium-sized population centers.

What concerns me the most is that many children today seem to have absolutely no conscience, none whatsoever. Refuse to indulge them, deny a so-called need or request, cause them to get angry, etc. and their first impulse is to kill you. I remember a case in Maryland where a son shot his father because he refused to let him borrow the car to go out on a date, and now we have an entire family paying the price because the parents squashed a teenaged relationship?? Sickening.

I could pull the switch on the electric chair to fry one of the little miscreants with a clear conscience.

Just last year...mid-summer, IIRC...a 16 year-old and her 21 year-old Gothic boyfriend beat and stabbed her mother to death because she was afraid of him and wouldn't allow him in the house unless her husband was present.
When she came in from shopping and found him there...she told him to leave.
It happened less than a mile from me, as the crow flies...in the Cotton Grove community near Southmont.

They stuffed her body in a tool storage shed behind the house and went for pizza, and rumor from law enforcement suggests that she may have been still alive when she went into the shed. From what I understand, she was a fine lady who was loved and respected among her family and in her community.

A pair of worthless little pukes if there ever was one.
