Why is the Arisaka action so strong?

Also, what action is it based off of?
Isn't it Mauser clone or something?

Bonus points for pics.

The japanese ariaskas are basically a Mauser with some minor diffrences.

Supposedly the Japanese had a very superior heat treatment process for the receivers vs what the Germans were using.

Part of the reason is that Japanese industrial technique was so poor. Make 'em simple, make 'em strong.

(reference: Dr. Eric Bergerud, "Touched by Fire" about the Pacific war. He dedicates half a chapter to Japanese weapons and discusses how some of their design flaws ended up as advantages in jungle warfare. Great book.)

I wish I had a picture of the last Arisaka I saw. It was absolutely cherry. My friend (a gun guy) held it up and said "Isn't this neat? It's my dad's. I don't even know what it is." The first thing I noticed was the Imperial chrysanthemum surrounded by perfect bluing and perfect stock...I asked him if he would will it to me when he dies.

Had one in 7.7 I got for a cassette tape over 20 years ago, we traded straight across, Pink Floyd tape for junker rifle. Head space was so bad you could load a shell, close the bolt, shake the gun and hear the cartridge rattle back and forth.
Only fired it once or twice. We laid the gun on a straw bale, tied a string to the trigger and placed another bale on top. Then got behind a building and pulled the string. Gun fired with no problems.
Wish I would have kept it and bought a stock and turned it into a 45-70. Oh well.

Better yet I had recorded the album off the radio after paying about 50 cents for the tape. Never did care for them either. Cheapest gun I ever got outside of a gift. Ended up selling it to the old Shapels gun shop in Boise with a box of Norma shells that came with it for 60 bucks IIRC. Fun memory.

I wish I could trade really really bad music for guns!
Never did care for them either.

Those comments rank right up there with "Civilians shouldn't be allowed to own guns" and "The Second Amendment is a collective right and allows for each state to create its own militia, such as the National Guard."

You know I have yet to meet anyone who likes pink floyd who hasn't tried drugs. All the more reason to stay clean!
You may be right about that, Krochus. I partook in my share of recreational substances in my youth and was a huge Floyd fan back then. Haven't touched anything stronger than Jack Danels in over 20 years but I still love Pink Floyd. I guess the classics never go out of style.

Wow this is getting OT but I like Pink Floyd and I've never used drugs:D

Sorry I did have a comment but the whole Floyd thing threw me off.....

The swords they made were some of the finest steel in the world they say. So it makes sense the steel was strong. As far as tecnology goes it really is a given. :uhoh:

I also would have to disagree with the comments regarding Pink Floyd. I like them.

I mean, it's a great deal...but leave the Floyd alone

Cool, I now know I need to research Arisakas so I can make an educated purchase for a project gun when a bubbaed one gets traded in.

Ohh, I like Pink Floyd too, and Cigars & Whisky are the only drugs I've ever done. I like Hendrix and Marley as well, amongst my rather eclectic music tastes.

Morons and mums. Part 82. I bought a 6.5 Arisaka because no one in the shop me included knew what it was. It had been sporterized. Mum used to be intact right up to the point bubba drilled a scope mount hole in it. It is one of my projects, sooner or later I'll sorten the barrel(it's like 30"), re-stock it, re-blue all the metal and keep it as a deer gun. It shoots 1.5" at 100 right now so it's not terrible.

I own a lot of Floyd, but lots of other stuff too, like The Beach Boys and the Eagles. No drugs here.

The killer with Arisakas is ammo. Spendy no matter what. Norma is about it, even if you handload.

You can fire '06 in one, but I don't recommend it unless its to repel boarders.

I've seen some pretty rough Arisakas showing up lately at shows. $150-$300 range. They never really interested me, mostly like Mark Whiteman said, because ammo is scarce and expensive, but also because the Japanese are known for their collective dislike of Pink Floyd. :D

I recently picked up a Type 99 cheap. Grafs has Privi Partizan brass for about the same price as other similar size rounds. I use the same bullets as I use for my Enfields. If you reload, the cost is the same as any other .30 cal round.

Ah Pink Floyd, I like his music ;-)

Arisakas aren't any stronger than other Mauser 98 pattern rifles. In fact some of the last ditch ones are too weak to be safe.

I don't know about all the Japanese rifles, but I read in the early 60's P.O. Ackley took a 6.5 rifle and ran a 30/06 chamber reamer in it and shot it several times with 30/06 ammo. It didn't hurt the action at all:what:
