Why is the M60 on its way out?

The firing rate of the M60 is rated at 550 rounds per minute.
Most run at 600-700 rpm when they become worn.

The 249 SAW in 5.56 NATO is a far better squd machine gun, lighter, more manuverable and no need to carry extra odd caliber ammunition just for the machine gun.

The M240 General Purpose machine gun is heavier than the M60 and is a much better general purpose gun.

It is more stable in the sustained fire role, it offers greater range of motion in the indirect role, the gun is easier to field strip and maintain, and optics are easier to mount and keep aligned on this gun.

Teufelhunden,

Thanks for the tip, bro. Being a non-smoker, never thought of that. I just figured the action was cycling faster than the extra-long blank cases could extract and tumble from the bottom of the receiver.

Best,
John Bear Ross
