I have been looking for a reasonably price k or l frame 3" smith for some time now (reasonably priced AND 3", unreasonable, I know). The guns I've seen look fine, but the prices have been outrageous. Last week, I stumbled into nearby gun store and found up a stainless 2 3/4" Ruger Service Six. The gun was in incredible condition for an ~28 year old handgun with only one sizable scratch near the muzzle and wood stocks in unused condition (owner preferred packies but kept the wood). The trigger had been worked on and approached that of my S&W 686. After my 3rd trip to the gun store to take yet another look at it, I picked it up.
Though I haven't made it to the range yet, I'm pretty excited about this gun. One of the revolvers I was targeting was a S&W 65 but the Ruger is WAY less expensive and has a very classic looking as well. To my way of thinking, a 2 3/4" service six with a $60 trigger job approaches , but it's still a heckuva lot less expensive.
Here's a pic of a lower-condition model from auctionarms:

Does anyone else have the same fondness for the 2 3/4" service six that I've seen to developed? It it just a poor man's S&W?
