why should I NOT paint

I have a remington 5r milspec 308, which I love except for the fact that it is stainless. I actually use it for hunting as well as target shooting. Any reason I can't paint the barrel with some quality heat resistant paint? FOr what I do it is hard to justify taking it to a 'smith and paying $300+ to get paint/finish put on it.

If I was going to paint a rifle I would spend a few more bucks and buy the Duracoat. It will last a lot better than regular paint.

I am not sure if anything would have to be done to the stainless first, such as etching so the paint will stick.

Probably go on fine if you lightly buff with some ultra fine steel wool. And make sure you degrease the surface. Acetone will probably do.
