We all know what it means, but most people who don't visit forums like this have no idea what it means.

What are you trying to accomplish, if anything, by wearing a Molon Labe T shirt? Certainly it can't be to attract other people to the RKBA cause, as they don't know what it means unless they ask. If that was what you are trying to do, wouldn't putting "Come and get them" be a better thing to put on a shirt?

Is it just an inside comment meant to be understood only by other gun enthusiasts?

Its partially an inside thing. Its also an opportunity for outreach (wear a Molon Labe shirt and someone's bound to ask you what it means).

Also, "...from my cold, dead hand" is old and tired.

I think cold dead hands is a better way to say it, but why not say it some fancy shmancy way?

Molon Labe ? sounds like what we should have done in Iraq

In The Greek and Plutarch, Apophthegmata sense.

It's popular for the same reason that nearly every sub culture has distinct mantras or insignia. People want to identify. Molon Labe provides a discreet, in-the-club approach to saying you are a gun enthusiast. Wear it down the street, and it helps you meet like-minded people--as well as make like-minded people feel less isolated and marginalized. It can easily be compared to a branding strategy, actually. People want to identify themselves as part of a group; the brand helps establish an identity apart from the masses.

MattC has nailed it,altho the phrase & what it represents to us gunners is becoming more widely known.*BEG*If it's written in the usual Greek-style letters those not in the know figger you for a frat rat & write you off.Call it a touch of urban cammo.

Maybe by wearing a shirt/hat in public, one will see it and think...

"hmm, I wonder what that means."

maybe later that day they ask someone or go online and look it up.

One more person aware that a LOT of people are responsible firearm owners, hopefully, they can pull their head out into the sunny air as well.

Then again, I may just be wishful thinking.

Perfect Icebreaker

+1 for Vote from the rooftop shirts

Short answer. It is more of an icebreaker to talk about something I am passionate about.

Hence this thread.

I make the Molon Labe decals and you can not imagine the amount of people I have gotten interested in shooting and firearms / rkba just by them wondering and asking me what they mean. Friends, family, clients. You never have to be pushy, just tell the short version of the 300 Spartans. Usually they ask who is buying them and I can then explain the parallel to our rkba. Most of the time I am happy to see a light bulb go off. Then I hand them one, and they feel in the know and hopefully repeat the process. This is why I sell them in sets and the average person buying decals from me here on THR gets more then enough to hand out.

So yeah my answer is, "Icebreaker".

.

The whole idea is a bit too OTT and standoffish for me. I haven't been
bothered about "branding" and "wanting to belong to groups" since I was
oh, about 18 years old. But whatever floats your boat. Frankly, I could go
my whole life without reading or (shudder) hearing the phrase ever again.
It already old and tired.
