Does anyone else wonder why S & T has a lower number of viewers than the other columns?

I would think that this would be the highest and most popular column... isn't safety and personal defense the reason we have handguns in the first place?

Not very many new posts. Things have a habit of getting locked quickly if there is a passionate debate going on too. I said passionate debate, not personal attacks and such.

I suspect it may have to do with the fact that only members can see the forum. GGD usually have 4 times the number of guests as members viewing it.

Personally, I view some of the threads but don't find myself having much to add. I live in Illinois and can't carry legally, so shooting is more of a hobby for me.

i think limiting the bloodlust and chestbeating discourages and inhibits some. its easy to run astray that way i've done it myself recently. in particular if a certain scenario resonates on some personal level i have to really start to look before i hit enter. its easy to say something inappropriately. when that happens you might get reminded about standards of behavior.

I look at it everyday, but really don't have anything new to add. A lot of posts here are simply announcements about upcoming training etc. The ones that aren't all deal with something that has been rehashed 100 times.

There are usually 20-30 new discussions under gen gun disc and other good topics under the firearms sections, so...where am I going to spend my time?

Plus, software is hard. Hardware is easy. More fun to buy another redundant gun than to actually war-game scenarios where it might be necessary.

;)

Stuff does seem to get locked or moved easily.

Truth be told, more people are intrested in hardware than software.

Edit: got beat to it by others ^^^

No, not really.

S&T is more of a no BS reality based forum along the lines of the other specialize forums and as such doesn't get the random traffic of General. You'd see a lot more activity if everyone's Mad Max fantasy was tolerated, but since this forum is supposed for be for addressing realistic situations and training you won't see the same post count.

+ 1000000 also if something has the potential of going off track the mods lock it down premtively, kinda like the cops that prevented that Oregon man from going on a killing spree by apprehending him before any crime was commited. Of course the mods here are not the goverment so it is an entirely different thing.

Yeahhh...I have seen several totally nice low key intelligent Threads in this section being and staying "on track" completely, no controversy or contention or tangents wirth noticing, get "locked" with some non-sequiter quip by a mod as last word, and it made no sense to me at all.

The 'My Gunfight' one comes to mind as among the most recent of these.

Can anyone explain to me the reasoning for it being 'Locked' like that?

Seemed like a constructive dialogue to me...on topic, good notes shared, learning, thinking...

What gives?

The times I have written the mods to ask about their reason, no reply was given.

It's like a bad GFI in a Bathroom...Comb your Hair, or tie a Shoe, it goes off.

At least with that, you can reset it yourself, or, replace it.

This did end up kind of coaxing me ( without me even dwelling on it, ) to pass this section by more and more, on my way to ohhh, the Black Powder Section or the Reloading Section, where oddly enough, intelligent and reasonable threads and dialogue DO seem able to occur with no mods slamming a "lock" on it for no sensible reason at all.

Does that answer your question?

This. Keep in mind that there are a lot more general gun owners than self-defense oriented gun owners. An old guy interested in a wood and blued steel shotgun might be interested in the general forum, but not necessarily a self defense forum.

Very few gun owners are serious about self dense. Very few will expend the time and money to become reasonably proficient with firearms. Given the threat level most people face that might well be rational.

People like to talk about 9mm vs .45, the latest gun, etc.

There are times that reading this site makes doing something difficult
Like when you are in sweats and walk outside take the trash to the can and your neighbor with an arm in a sling from shoulder surgery asks you to back him up cause he is hearing funny sounds coming from our other neighbors house (his old property he sold his buddy who is remodeling it)

Yeah... see it's sweats and I was just popping out to chuck the kitchen trash
Our neighbor is in training for a 150mi 3 day charity ride, and had ridden his bike out to work on the house. That ended well but mindset is kicking you when it goes from white to orangey red...

Self Defense

Well the subject is alive and well really!

I put a Glock 19 on my belt, every day. The last couple of months helping out in my Sons business, Security.

Where my Wife and I live is very nice, and very safe, where I work? Not so much.

With a list of residents, addresses and phone #s, my job for 6 hours in day light, ask people walking, do you live here? Some answer no, and I allow them to knock and visit, or not happy with the answers, or them!
Move them on, the type normally with the whole bottom in underpants, hanging over their pants.

This is a fill in for a Vacationing Security Officer.
Is it dangerous? Not really, they see the Glock in a speed holster, I wear the Flag, a spare couple of Glock 17 magazines, and if a show of force is required, a pump 12 gage, with 6 low velocity slugs in it, and a sling.

Lots of laughs, kids are good on majority, the Liverpool accent intrigues them.

Going out for supper early this evening, cover shirt, swap one mag; for a Sure Fire, sit in a booth, back to the wall, my Wife and I chat, great night.

Expecting trouble? Not really, a Hi Cap Pistol? a just in case item, like the spare tire.
Do I scan all around, yes, at work, and out with my Wife. No crouching and flitting from car to car though.

i have to agree with the majority here so far. i really like this forum and enjoy the topics that come up, but it seems sometimes threads get locked that have good potetial for thought provoking debate. i'm not a mod, and don't want to be one so i just deal with it and move on.

i also agree about the comment that if eotwawki threads/chest thumping were allowed this place would be far different and i feel it would be for the worse. i enjoy discussions on realistic scenarios many of which never crossed my mind and got me to think about what i would really do and how i would go about doing it.

Same. I have pretty much stopped visiting/posting much on this website. I stop by once every couple days to see if something is of note, or maybe have a little to add.

I understand this place is "the high road" and all. I understand they don't want the forum degenerating into airsoft commandos wondering is 700 rounds on their belt is enough for the zombie apocalypse. I understand there's language standards because they don't want children posting flames or outright vulgarity.

But there's so many threads that get locked for the mere possibility of potentially going off topic, makes it not really worth posting much to me. And maybe it's just the culture difference or something, but I was never aware that a certain four letter D word, similar to what a beaver builds on a river, was a curse word until I started posting here. Not to mention the mods usually get to close threads with the same kinda non-sequitor remarks a member would be given warnings for.

But hey, if that's how they want to run the place....by all means....go for it. There's lots of forums out there that I enjoy more.

Probably accounts for a good share of it. I sorta fall into that catagory but if an interesting topic appears I tend to follow it to get a feel for the mind-set of those with more experience with S&T type subjects. I find a lot of concepts in here that I might not have ever thought of if I hadn't followed some of these threads.

That probably also accounts for not posting in this section often, I mostly don't have strong views on some of the topics and others are read just for the information.

I did have a couple of interesting threads I was following get closed but hey, that's life.:(
