Had to cancel my newspaper

I’ve known for a couple weeks now that The Dallas Morning News had decided to no longer accept classified ads for handguns unless they are placed by a licensed dealer. I didn’t like it, but I let it simmer and didn’t do anything about it. This morning, however, when I heard the classified advertising manager of the paper cite the reason as (paraphrased) “Private sale of handguns does not reflect the values of the Dallas Morning Newsâ€, I lost it.

I took the plunge and cancelled and let them know why . I simply cannot directly financially support an institution that has this attitude.

I am very disappointed. There’s always the Star-Telegram…I can just skip over Molly Ivins’ column.

I get the Dallas Morning News for free... and I don't read it. IIRC, the Star Telegram is the fastest growing paper in this market. Newspapers in general have... how to say this politely... declined in quality, so I don't bother most of the time anymore.

One of the best things about living in Colorado Springs is our paper The Gazette.

Very libertarian paper (we get columns by Walter E Williams, Jacob Sullum, Thomas Sowell, and even DAVE KOPEL! on the editorial page, and NO MOLLY IVANS!).

A wise man does not become isolated from the enemy! Use the filthy rag to rebut editorial comment. Wrap a dead fish in it, line your garbage can with it. For a penny or two a day one can see the printed lies and strategy of our common enemy.

Take up your pen and fight the battle! Use your mind as a weapon. Do not bury your rifle, display it at every opportunity - They must know that we remain strong and unbeaten. We will sweep them before us, as a stinking pile of filth and socialism!

A wise man wouldn't PAY to play on the enemiy's field. Why make them stronger?

The price for information is small compared to the reward of having information and winning. a few readers less will not harm a large newspaper chain in my opinion. If there is another news outlet in your area, choose it, if not perhaps your local library will have up to date printed news. All I am saying here is don't isolate yourself from what is happening in your area, political and otherwise.

Instead of walking away from the source of your frustration, put them on the spot and debate them, let the editor know your opinions. Get others involved and challenge slanted news, demanding news that is balanced, containing opinions of those the newspaper is in disagreement with. All news media in reality have a civic duty to provide news to and about everyone in the community. Challenge and shame them into becoming a believable source of information.

As for their classified ad policy, probably not much can be done. They need to be made aware though that many in the community will take their advertising dollars to other sources, not just those items they disagree with, but those advertising dollars of items they agree with, too! Written help from a few friends in the community might help illustrate this point.

Most newspapers have websites that will allow you to browse their most assinine and infamitory articles free of charge. I would go this route to keep tabs rather than give then money to continue their propaganda.

Yes, but...

Newspaper websites seem to be the absolute worst (excluding porn sites) when it comes to excessive graphics, poison Java, unkillable pop-ups and other trash. They know this themselves, that's why most of them show a "printer-friendly" (eyeball-friendly) option. Don't even get me started on their wanting one to register with personal info that's none of their business!

Where I live in Virginia, the only big paper we can get is the Washington Post. As a result, I have no newspaper delivered to me.

Unfortunately the Washington Times doesn't deliver to the Shenandoah Valley. Bummer, I miss it. Reading it online isn't the same.

Orthonym, run Mozilla on a Windows machine or Safari on a Mac instead of that infernal Internet Explorer piece of crap and you can get rid of the annoying popups (and have a more secure surfing experience at the same time)

The DMN doesn't cover local news (how many months did that fake-drug scandal appear in the Observer before the DMN decided it would run a story?) and for other news the Web is far better. I just cancelled a few months ago, and the classified policy makes another good reason.

Sorry to hear about that. I’m actually pretty proud of my local paper the Southern Illinoisan. They have done a 180 in the last couple of years. We now have Ann Coulter’s article and they are openly opposing our Governor.
