here is a reason why you should always wear saftey glasses. a rifle blew up in may of 05. i wasnt wearing glasses (at the time) and i picked this out of my face this morning. 7 and half years later:what:

i got lucky with no permament damage after eye surgery. i always wear them now

Amazing how embedded shrapnel will surface over the years. Starts by feeling like a small pimple and there it is.

Yeah, you were extremely fortunate on that note and at least you share the experience so others can learn the importance of good eye protection. Good going!

Yep, God gave you only one set of eyes and replacement parts are not available. When I shoot, I wear safety glasses. When I reload, I wear safety glasses. When I mow the lawn, I wear safety glasses.

I NEVER wear any protective eye wear while shooting but then again I always shoot with both eyes closed. =D

reloadron, I thougt it was a black head for the last 2 months. about a week ago I realized that it was a chunk of metal. had to wait for it to surface more to get a good grip on it.

there are 2 more dark spots that will come up within a year

You're a lucky fella. At my local range everyone is required to wear eye and ear protections, if you don't you're out of there.

Whenever there's a foreign object buried under your skin your body takes forever to push it out. One time I had a callus under the base of my little toe. I spent years trimming that sorry SOB til I pulled a piece of bone (or calcium maybe?) out with the callus. Yahoo, no more callus.

Just weird.

I had a bee stinger in the middle of the sole of my foot work it's way out after 8 years once. That was 15 years ago and I still have a permanent brown mark where I was stung. Some things take forever to "come out".

I take it you can't get MRI's done... It'd suck if one of those super powerful magnets blew that thing the rest of the way through your head the long/wrong way.

I had 2 mri's on my leg. I told them what happened and they took X-rays of my eyes. that was it. didn't feel too much when they were done

What kind of rifle was it that blew up? Or, more appropriately, steel or aluminum receiver?

I thought that they wouldn't let you in the same room as an MRI if you have ferrous metal in your body.

Yep, give it time and those will surface.

When I was young and of course invincible I never gave much thought to safety. Fortunately with age comes some wisdom (that plus safety is beat into us at work) and I also now wear my safety glasses for task at home as well as work. Heck, sometimes if helping a neighbor move heavy things I even wear my safety shoes. At 62 I want to keep what I have that still works working till I am in the grave.

Robbins290, Thanks for posting that :). It really drives home the point: Safety starts with us and some things cannot be replaced, like your good vision you need; not just for this endeavor, but for everything we do in life.
I wear safety glasses for almost everything anyway (workplace habit).

Yeah, even if I don't have "safety" glasses on while I'm playing with explosives, I'll at least have sunglasses on. My eyes and ears are two things I really don't want to leave to chance.

Good post and a great reminder.

I have to admit I only wear safety glasses when shooting Black Powder as I once witnessed a spent percussion cap blow back and cut a friend's cheek just below the eye.

I'll start wearing them for all shooting now thanks to your post.

Duster, most sunglasses will just shatter and make things worse

I use theseSun/Safety glasses for most every thing there not the best ever but at like 3 bucks if they get demolished, dropped in the lake or covered in paint, its no big loss assuming you have another set near by

The "I've been shooting for ABC decades and never wore XYZ" folks are always ready to chime in and give unsafe advice so it is great to have members point out the value of wearing the minimum eye and ear safety equipment when those long odds against a failure run out.

I also wear them when I mow my lawn. heck, I pretty much wear them when ever I'm working of something
I wear them all the time as well. Actually, at indoor ranges, I've gotten hit a few times by lead splashback off the backstop. Once it was on the cheek. No skin penetration but made me glad I had my eye protection on. I talked about it to my brother who many years ago ran an indoor range and said it happens more often than you think.

This splashback, noise, and air quality are several of the reasons I like to go to outdoor ranges.

My sunglasses ARE safety glasses first. I strongly urge you to do the same. Tinted safety glasses are cheap and look just like sunglasses

I wear safety glasses at work at all times and now that I'm in the habit I wear those same specs in tinted form as shades anytime its light out.

I wont shoot a gun without eye protection
