In the 1995/1996 legislative session, the Wisconsin legislature passed a statewide pre-emption bill that prohibited any municipalities from enacting gun control laws more stringent than those at the state level.

The pre-emption law shut down the city of Madison's ban on the sale or possession of handguns. It also has kept at bay hundreds of anti-gun proposals that have been advanced by our worst enemies.

Well, taking advantage of the change in the makeup of the state legislature, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is looking to have the city of Milwaukee exempted from the statewide pre-emption law.

If he's successful, Barrett could put into place some of the worst gun laws in the country: handgun bans; bans on private sales; bans on Evil Black Rifles; or even total bans on firearms. (Think that's nuts? Look at Chicago).

If Barrett succeeds, then look for other municipalities to do the same thing.

It's going to be a tough fight for the next two to four years. The anti's are back in control in WI.

same thing in MD

Some newbie is trying to get a bill with the same exemption for our version of Madison: Montgomery County.

These get suggested here every few years, and all have been DOA. This year, with a new anti-gun-owner governor? Who knows!:uhoh:

K-Romulus, the balance of power in the state Capitol has shifted to the anti-gun side.

Our governor, Jim Doyle, is one of the most anti-gun governors in the country.

Control of our state Senate just got handed over to Majority Leader Judy Robson (D-Beloit), who has long been a champion of anti-gun legislation.

The Republicans hold a thin 52:47 lead in the Assembly, and there are plenty of squishy Republicans in that number.

I remember very well the ballot referendums in Milwaukee and Kenosha in 1994. It was a huge effort to get people to go door-to-door and get voters to say "no."

We even had a large segment of the Milwaukee Police Department's officers helping out (although they couldn't wear their uniforms when talking to citizens; only anti-gun chair-polishers can wear uniforms in public when lobbying).

It's only been a couple of weeks since the anti's took power, and they're already looking to turn back over a decade of pro-gun progress.

It's not the anti's fault that they won, though. They were very skillful in duping people who weren't paying attention.

It's the fault of the gun owners who believed the anti's lies.

Monkeyleg, can you give me a reference where you got this info from? I want to make sure that it's accurate before I go shooting my mouth off in an :fire: :fire: :fire: e-mail.

While neither party has a stellar record these days when it comes to the 2nd ammendment, Dems are clearly the worst... It's just what they do.

Timmy, the owners of one of the gun stores here said that Barrett was coming to meet with them to discuss the idea. He was hoping--futilly--that they would publicly endorse the idea.
