Barrett unveils anti-violence proposals

Joined by a group of local officials, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett today called for a series of changes to state law that he says would help reduce violence on city streets.

The proposals include expanding criminal background checks to cover those who buy guns from unlicensed dealers; prohibiting gun sales to anyone under 21; increasing the budget for the State Crime Lab; and requiring manufacturers to “fingerprint” guns before they are shipped to Wisconsin for sale.

Under the last proposal, guns would be fired by the manufacturer - or a local dealer - and the bullet placed on file, so it could be used for comparison in any future gun crimes.

Barrett made the push a day after the state Assembly narrowly upheld Gov. Jim Doyle’s veto of a measure that would have allowed residents to carry concealed weapons in the state. Barrett said the changes he proposed would do more to reduce “senseless violence” here and elsewhere than the concealed weapons change.

The proposals all require Legislative approval.

One day after he could have contributed to a real solution to violence by allowing victims to shoot back he comes out with this load of manure.

I especially like that old chestnut: ballistic fingerprinting.

Liberals are more stupid than we give them credit. I honestly believe that they have a mental disease and should all be committed to an institution. They shouldn't be allowed out in public without adult supervision. Unfortunately the institution that they've committed themselves to is our government.

At least a bunch more dead residents of the City of Milwaukee won't hurt his chances for re-election as they'll still be able to vote. :cuss:

I'm getting REAL tired of the morons in Milwaukee and Madison tinkling in my Corn Flakes.

From the sounds of this propossal, you'd think he was in negotiations with CBS to produce the new spin-off CSI: Milwaulkee

More money for crime scene analysis, more money for massive sci-fi bullet databases, and maybe a date with Jorja Fox...

Yah,

That and a bus pass will go far...

I don't think the Republican majority in either house are in much of a mood to pass any gun-control legislation.

Barrett knows this, he's grandstanding, and even those with the IQ of a journalist... ;) ought to be able to figure that out.

Well, perhaps they did in their own subtle way:

The proposals all require Legislative approval.

I guess that's journalist-eese for "not an ice cube's chance in he...."

Direct copy of the latest Daley/Blago press conference

This is almost exactly what Daley and Blago are trying to get through the Illinois legislature now, HB 2414, I think it is.

Did they leave out the "evil .50 caliber weapons of war" part?

When you can't control the gangs and don't want to prosecute criminals and send them away for years and years; blame the gun manufacturers and try to shift the attention of the ill informed somewhere else, well beyond your administration.

Does the ballistic fingerprinting include shotguns?
Don't put it past them Kevlarman! :D When you're dealing with a half-witted gerbil you can't really be surprised by the next thing that comes out of its mouth. Write him a letter as a "concerned citizen" and see if you can get him and his braintrust to include it in the legislative proposal that they are going to send to Madison.

Barrett knows this, he's grandstanding, ...

I know it's grandstanding but don't you get tired of it? Do they take everyone to be complete idiot? How do people like this get elected? When these people come out in public and make completely inane statements like this why doesn't someone do us all a favor and pat them on the head, give them their meds, slip their special jacket back on, and escort them back to their special room with the padding???

Most everyone is a complete idiot. That's how people like this get elected. The two armpits of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and Madison - decide the fate of the rest of the state. And, those armpits are full of voters who are government-reliant. Those voters feel warm and fuzzy when hearing feel-good-bull**** legislation proposals such as the above.

Friggen great.

If I sound a little salty, I am. :fire:

Goodness no Cosine it's exactly as AJ Dual stated, nothing but political grandstanding. It's just another page out of the demented anti-'s standard playbook. Just a try to claim the moral high ground after defeating those knuckle dragging gun nuts (again.)

Unfortunately there are alot of morons who will buy it and the warped little game that is Wisconsin politics will go on...

Under the last proposal, guns would be fired by the manufacturer - or a local dealer - and the bullet placed on file, so it could be used for comparison in any future gun crimes

That would effectivly make guns much more expensive/ end shipments altogether.

While WI residents won't be very happy with this counter-proposal...

I would like to see the firearms industry simply cut off Wisconsin from any firearms sales to national guard, law enforcement or civilian FFL sales.

The only available guns would be what is in-state. If the feds or another state send a shipment of new guns, that group gets added to the embargo list too.

Wow, sounds like yall have a real jackass of a mayor.

Years after Maryland was one of the first states to pass ballistic fingerprinting, and we STILL havent solved any crimes with it, go figure. :fire: Just wasted millions upon millions of dollars. :cuss:

So, those of you here with a better understanding than mine of Milwaukee and Wisconsin politics don't believe that this will go anywhere?

Don't worry about that Cosine. He's just the Mayor of Milwaukee, anything he proposes would have to be picked up by a member of the state Legislature. Right now a bill like that woudn't even make it out of comittiee.

Even then, he has no better idea than we do how the fall '06 elections will go.

We need to stay watchful as always, but it's unlikely any anti-gun legislation will be coming down the pipe soon. Pro-gun forces still control the Legislature, even if not to the point needed to override Doyle. The fall '06 elections could change that, 20 odd Repub legislators are retiring (some may change their minds if no good candidate steps up) but IMO, it would take gross negligance on the part of the GOP for that to happen.

Fingerprinting barrels sounds like a monumental stride, but there are inherent problems. They keep forgetting criminals don't go to gun stores and seek out the bst gun for the job and then pay hard earned cash for it. There is a reason they are called criminals. Also it's trivial to negate the barrel fingerprinting. Alther the barrel or *GASP* swap it out in about 2 minutes with a different one, problem solved.

Well, yeah, but it's made firearms more expensive and difficult for commoners to buy, so it's been effective.

Wow, sounds like yall have a real jackass of a mayor.

Its almost a requirement to being a mayor of Milpukee.

'Backbench' Barrett has a very secure job as a Milpukee mayor until retirement, a sexual abuse/harassment scandal, or criminal misconduct remove him from the job. With Barrett, it will probably be retirement.

Barrett is a complete cipher, which actualy makes him something more palatable as a liberal big-city mayor. He's actually less irritating than someone who is equally on the wrong side of the issues, but more outspoken. Especialy as compared to the pandering race-baiters they've had at times in places like D.C. or Detroit...

He only comes out of the woodwork when it's safe. Right now, his side "won" on CCW, so he proposes all this gun registration, background checks for face-to-face transfers, ballistic fingerprinting. (Ever heard of a revolver? Did you ride the "short bus" to "mayor school"?) Essentialy, it's like the nerdy pipsqueak kid jumping up at the back of the high-school pep rally screaming out "Hey! Me too! Um... YEAH!"

He knows even if his proposals stood a chance as legislation, they wouldn't be acted on until the next session, so he knows he's got about a .000001% chance of the press ever asking him about his "sweeping changes" again.

Consumate "finger in the wind" school of governance. Barrett's only upside is that the finger at least dosen't smell like an intern...
