WI: new bill would register guns, ban private sales

I got a call from a reporter an hour or so ago for comment on a bill I hadn't even heard of.

State Senator Spencer Coggs and Representative Johnnie Morris-Tatum held a press conference today to announce their new bill, which they will introduce in the next session.

The bill would require private gun sales to be reported to the Department of Justice. The DOJ would have to be given the name and address of both the buyer and the seller, as well as the make, model and serial number of the gun being sold.

The bill also establishes a criminal penalty for anyone who sells a gun to another person who later uses in in a crime.

I don't think this bill has the proverbial snowball's chance but, if we see a Democrat landslide in November, we may wind up having to fight this beast.

I just read the article during my lunch break. The whole schem is backed by the Brady bunch.

Typical. Punish everone in Wisconsin for problems that happen within the confines of Milwaukee that has been run by socialists/liberals forever.

Don't think it has a chance either, but on the other hand this horrible idea has now seen the light of day and will probably now recur everytime there is a driveby or liquor store shooting in Milwaukee regardless of the origin of the guns.

If I understood the article correctly, it called for gun owners to provide the serial #s of the guns they already owned also?

I don't see alot of people including myself complying.

The Brady Bill didn't have a chance in Hell either but after the last vote was taken and they recessed for Thanksgiving three -- count 'em -- THREE senators decided to take another "last" vote and passed it. One of those senators was Bob Dole.

I'd speculate that it's a means of creating some leverage for a future "trade-off," where the evil legislators will give up their bill if the good legislators will give up or modify their CCW bill. I'd further speculate that the evil sponsors are from "safe" districts where anti-gun measures are always supported at the voting booths. It's called "politics." Please correct me if I'm wrong.

SteelyDan, the two legislators are black, and represent districts that are probably 80% black which, in Milwaukee, means anti-gun. They cobbled the bill together at the request of some so-called community groups who are upset over recent shootings.

I'm constantly amazed that some people believe that passing another law is going to change things, that they believe that criminals are going to register their guns or report private transactions. What amazes me even further is that the reporter didn't bother to repeat what I just said in the article.

So if the buyer's gun gets stolen and used in a crime, the seller goes to jail? Or what about years later the buyer commit a crime with the gun?

Sometimes when I read this kind of BS it makes me want to move to MN with SteelyDan, but then I come back to my senses and do what I can to keep these kinds of laws off the books.

I guess I will just have to stay in WI. It is kind of tough living in WI and being a Viking fan. They almost didn't give me a driver license since being a Packer fan is a requirement to live in this state.

Actually a college roommate of mine lived in Prescott and was a HUGE Viking fan. He always told us about Jerry Burns coming in to the Steamboat and getting drunk and swearing like crazy.

All joking aside, this bill needs to be crushed. Private sales are not the problem.
