My wife carries a Glock 36 (.45 caliber - 6 round mag). She never changes.

I carry both 9mm and .45. I like the .45 for power but I can shoot the 9 a LOT faster and it holds 16 rounds. (Twice what my .45 holds.) Basically it makes little difference to me whether I carry the 9 or the .45. I feel good with either.

Since we seem to be together almost ALL the time should I :

Carry a .45 so we can share ammo?
Carry a 9mm so I can carry more ammo if needed.
Work hard to decide which I like better and carry that regardless of what she carries?

As long as you are each carrying 5 rounds of your respective ammo who cares? It's not as though you are going to successfully invade Quebec with two pistols no matter how many rounds you can or can't share.

Unless your carry gun in .45 is also a Glock 36, there's no point in matching calibers, other than if .45 happens to be the one you decide you like best. Swapping magazines is simple and easy. Thumbing rounds out of one magazine and loading them into another just isn't going to be practical in any scenario short of zombies.

Have you taken any training or practice firing on man-sized targets drawing from your carry holster while moving? It's what you make the hits with that decides what you should carry. 3 hits COM with the .45, great! Only 1 out of 3, not so great. If you can make those 3 with the 9 every time then that's the gun for you.

Who cares? I stock more than 6 calibers of handgun ammo and that's just for me.

You said you shoot the 9 faster, so I voted for that.

I have nothing against 45, 40, or 10mm for CCW. But for awhile now I always recommend 38 or 9mm if someone asks. They both work with good loads and ammo is common and cheap and recoil and blast are low, all of which encourages more practice.

SHTF

The only time ammo compatibility is important is in a situation where the supplies are limited. For normal daily wear, it doesn't matter.

Not to start a caliber war but..

stocking up on defensive ammo for two calibers is less convenient than for one. I personally don't care for nine but if it works for you, use it. Kudos to your wife for her choice as most of the darlins have been brainwashed that the 45 is too much for a lady... Bull****!!

No offense, but it sounds as if you and the wife must live in one bada$$ place if you're worried about running out of ammo or sharing reloads during your next shootout. Maybe you should both carry a New York reload instead? :D

Thanks for the responses guys! BTW - My mags aren't compatible with the Glock.

I guess I was trying to get the best of both worlds. We don't particularly live in a bad area but I guess I was thinking dog pack attack (and a lot of misses) or SHTF. I will try shooting both my 9 and my .45 during the same session and see if I can determine which one I shoot best.

I have shot IPSC a couple of times and did a little better with the nine but then the .45 was new at the time and I wasn't as familiar with it.

Thanks for all the responses!

Looks like .50AE is your only option:evil:

Seriously, the poll speaks volumes. Get whatever works for YOU. Period.

Ignore all of the above advice and do what I tell you.

What I am telling you is to ignore my advice.

I advise you to follow this advice.

(Wait... wha- how????)

Seriously though, I agree with the majority of folks who say that you should go with what you are best and most comfortable with.

What he said. Get whatever works for You. You need to be comfortable, smooth and accurate with whatever you choose above all else.

Your wife shoots a .45 and you carry a 9?!?

How can you live with yourself? :neener:

J/K, go with the poll and carry what you're comfortable with. It's your life (and your wife's) on the line so make sure you're using what you use best.

Only one of you can wear the pants.

Since that has already been decided, I think it best if you stay with 9mm or maybe even .380. Don't forget the ballistic plate for catching incoming rounds:D.

The fact that both of you are armed should cover anything that comes up.
shot placement usually beats quantity. IMO

[humor] You should duct tape the ceramic plates to your back and carry a take down rifle, so when you take fire your wife can use you for cover while you assemble the rifle [/humor]

Sorry I couldn't resist. Shades of the original Mall ninja.

well...

for gut instinct, i'd say go w/ the .45 like her.

you say that you fire the 9mm faster. I'm assuming you also mean that your follow up shots are faster... meaning that you've gotten back on targer and are firing MEANINGFUL follow up shots. given that, I'd say go w/ 9mm b/c you're playing to your strengths.

.45 would make things easier/better. i'd recommend practicing with it a bit and seeing if you can get to the point where you're as equally comfortable as with 9mm.

i don't think that the Glock 30 or 21 mags are interchangable w/ the 36 so "mags" aren't an issue but ammo might be. honestly, i doubt you'll ever be at the point where you're sharing ammo w/o sharing mags (the time it'd take to unload a mag to reload yours means things have gone TERRIBLY wrong). if you can talk her into the glock 30 so you can either carry another 30 or a model 21, it'd probably be worth it.

if not, i'd say don't worry about the caliber difference. do what is best for you, she should do what's best for her. personally, if you learn to love the .45, get the XD .45 w/ 13+1.

if 9mm is what you shoot the best, go w/ that.

Carry what works best for you. You can't protect anyone else unless you can protect yourself first. Use the best tool for the job!

*Cliche mode...OFF!* :D
