Will a .22 Shotshell kill a Snake?

What about shooting the living heck out of the rattler with regular lead?
Its like shooting a fat guy whos pissed off. A lucky shot with a 22LR will drop him as fast as a 12ga slug, but do you really want to try it? Just walk away, the snake wont chase you

What? Shooting a snake with regular .22lr is like shooting a large pissed off human man? Umm... no. From my experience (snakes of course) a .22 to the head is instant death, a .22 to the body either paralyzes them or slows them down enough to finish the job.

I have never had the .22 shotshell work the action of my MKII, nor be a viable snake killer past 3-4 feet.

For a trail gun with shotshells for snakes, a 38 or larger will work better. .22 shells are filled with either #11 or #12 shot. I load my 38's with #8

The Winchester crimped shotshells have always performed better for me than the CCI capsule form.

That's interesting, I've found the opposite to be true. The crimped "rat shot" type shells were particularly anemic. The ones I tested on a piece of cardboard were not impressive at all. And while still not particularly impressive, the blue capsuled CCI's seemed to hold a tighter pattern at a comparable range.
They would not cycle my Browning Challenger II and as a matter of fact, I recall having to dig the case out of the chamber with a pocket knife. I don't fool with them anymore. I'm good enough with it to hit what I want with regular ammo.

nyresq: We shoot poisonous snakes around the house or trails because people do get bit. You are right they don't chase, they do lie in wait.

ive unleshed 17 regular rounds at a 5 foot black snake before. my friends also did, it was moving and 10 feet away so we had a hard time my other friends had 10 rounds lol. our guns are sighted for 75 so our sights werent helpin

Those who have zero experience at it, say it can't happen.

Those who have actual experience say it works.
I have actual experience, and it didn't work in my case. NAA .22LR mini-revolver, 1 1/4" barrel; CCI shotshells; snake was quite small, perhaps 2 feet long; range was less than 3 feet. The snake was centered in the pattern, and slithered off into the grass after I shot it. That was the last time I used that gun on snakes.

Perhaps it died later, but it certainly wasn't immediately incapacitated, and if it wouldn't kill a snake as thick as your thumb from less than 3 feet away, then it's certainly not going to do much to an eastern diamondback other than make it mad.

Now, out of a longer-barreled pistol or revolver, it might do a little better, and better still out of a rifle. Even better than that would be a .38/.357/9mm/.45 shotshell out of a centerfire pistol or carbine, as there is a marked difference in shot size.

For this application, something like a Taurus Judge loaded with .410 birdshot would probably be better than a .22.

Not sure about snakes, but these work great on flying squirrels and bats that get indoors, up to 16-20 ft, with relatively little damage to the underlying structure!

I always thought there was a valid reason why folk south of the border toted sawed off/pistolized .410 or 20 ga.doubles as "snake guns". Maybe their snakes were bigger ? >MW

Why the subsonic? Because it is quiet and works a lot better than snakeshot.
Back in the old days we carried "Snakecharmers" but if you shoot that in the city limits you are bound to get some attention.

If I were to be confronted by an Eastern Diamondback, I certainly wouldn't think a shotgun was overkill...

From personal experience... CCI .22 shotsells out of a 5 inch Single Six will kill up to 30 inch Copperheads at 1 to 10 feet with 2 shots or less. I have executed this scenerio multiple times picking blackberries.

On a funny note, a Shindawa commercial weed whacker will only make one mad but a brush hook will stop it right then and there.
