I have a large ring mauser action and an Adams and Bennet 338-06 barrel that I have been meaning to put together into a rifle. I have been reluctant to start on this project because I need to:
1a. tap the action for a scope
1b. clean up the action a little more
1c. possibily buy a new trigger/safety
2. get the whole thing blued
3. get a wood stock (I just like wood better)
4. perform the final chamber reaming

I really only have a barrel wrench and action vise. I was planning to rent the other tools I need.

I have just found a deal on a Winchester XTR in 30-06 that the guy says is rusted on the outside, but no problems internally. I was thinking if the barrel is the only problem, I could potentially fit my Mauser barrel to the Winchester.

Has anyone tried this and will it work? Searching on the internet hasn't been very conclusive. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

If the barrel is already threaded for a Mauser, it won't fit the Model 70 unless you cut off the threads and start over.

98 Mauser threads are 1.100" x 12 V TPI.

The Pre-64 Model 70 is 1.000" x 16 V TPI.

Not sure what the post-64 is, but it isn't the same as a Mauser or a Pre-64.

Thanks for the fast reply! I'll take a look at some of the auction sites to see how much a Winchester barrel will be.

I really appreciate your knowledge of guns. I've benefited from your direct comments to me and your posts to other peoples' questions.

The Winchester barrel and the 98 Mauser barrel are not interchangeable.
A Winchester barrel purchased elsewhere still requires the skills of a person knowledgeable in barrel fitting and headspaceing.
In short, it's not just a case of threading the barrel into the action.

In fact it could be made to fit I think. Yes It would take some machining, but no, it would not involve cutting off the threads. The minor diameter of the Mauser threads is almost as great as the major diameter of the Winchester threads,(AFAIK, the post 64 threads are the same as the pre64 but the breeching is different), about .985" by what I measure of a Mauser barrel I have. (The internal diameter of the threads in a Mauser receiver actually measured exactly 1" on my example, all measurements with a Mitutoyo vernier) So I believe it would be well possible & safe for a good smith to turn the Mauser threads down to 1" & rethread for the Winchester threads. He would also need to turn the Winchester breech face & rechamber the barrel to the correct headspace. So, it would be possible but whether or not its your best option ..... ?
I would suggest you sell your Mauser barrel, 338-06 should sell OK & get a prechambered barrel for a Winchester from one of the barrel makers who does them, you'd probably come out better off like this.

Question about LR Mauser barrels.

What actions will a LR Mauser threaded barrel fit, if reconfigured?

Assuming there is enough large diameter chamber area on the barrel contour you have, it would fit any action.

Again, by cutting off the 98 Mauser threads, lathe turning a new barrel shank & shoulder, and cutting new threads to fit a different action.
Then re-chambering it to proper headspace.

Above question narrowed....

"Assuming there is enough large diameter chamber area on the barrel contour you have, it would fit any action."

Thanks for the reply, but my question is more narrow. I have barreled many Mauser rifles. Not for several years, and not for many other action types.

I have a 1/4 rib, octagon barrel, on a Mauser single shot action. The barrel threaded shank is relieved, not the action. Because every revolution reduces the shank length, and shortens the threaded portion, this may only be done so many times.

I not longer want the barrel on that action. The question is, " What other common actions may this be re-cut to fit?" The question is based on the minor thread diameter, and the shank shoulder. The shank shoulder may be moved forward at least 1 inch if needed, and then retreaded for a action smaller than 1.100.

Thanks for any information.

Win action & mauser barrel

Jim,
I have a spare 30-06 Winchester model 70 barrel I removed to build a 257 ackley. Barrel is like new. If you procure the model 70 action and need a 30-06 barrel I have one.

Good luck
Steve
