Ok guys so I got a xds and I went to buy stuff to reload for it and I could only find 230 JHP sierra's My question is will they expand reasonably in my xds and do I have to make the loads really hot to get them to expand. I have win 231 as a powder.

Thanks Horsemen61

Your load data from your other bullets is your key to look at. If you have reloaded 230gr before use the same data. Jackted bullets will prefer the same as the same grain jacketed bullet in feet per second. I've shot half jackets HP in my 45lc and they expanded well. So you would not have a problem. Remember self defense ammo on the shelf is usually HP and that expands.

True this being my first 45 I haven't done any loading for it yet so that is why I asked.

With the (shorter) 3.3 inch barrel, velocities will be a tad less. But, I don't think that will be a noticeable amount.

One of the many good things about the .45ACP is that to do it's intended job, it isn't required to expand a lot, if any.

Full and total function trumps all else, then hitting your target sneaks in.

And what you hit does make a lot of difference :D

Yes, I know this isn't even close to being the same bullet.

Sierra knows bullets about as well as anybody.

They understand that their 230 gr .451 bullets are usually leaving muzzles between 700 and 1100 fps.

After a fair amount of .45 handgun bullet "testing" with barrels from 3 to 5 inches, and velocities from 700ish through 1000, I have faith in the reputable bullet makers ability to make it "work" at all intended velocities.

Ok guys so I got a xds

I just want you to know that I am insanely jealous. I have been looking for an XDS since Christmas. No luck.

I hope you enjoy it and it works well for you! Maybe I'll have one of my own someday.

Sierra JHP handgun bullets have a reputation for fragmenting pretty badly, just FYI. I am not sure how velocity plays into it though.
