Hey I'm curious can I shoot slugs through my Remchoked barrel. I have the full choke in there now. I'm going to the range this weekend to pattern buck and I want to shoot some slugs too.

Thanks.

Try the most open chokes first , that will probably work better.

You can shoot any STANDARD slug through any STANDARD choke, from Cylinder Bore to Full.

Where you need to be careful is in shooting slugs through non-standard extra full type chokes.

Most people have the best accuracy when using the Improved Cylinder, but you need to experiment with different chokes and different brands or types of slugs to find the best for you.

Ok thanks I just wanted to make sure before I go to the range my 11-87 has a full choke and my 870 is a smooth bore riot gun. Taking my aunt and cousin to the range this weekend to teach them the shotguns. And see about getting my aunt on target with a pistol.

kodiaz,

Start your new shooters out with light field loads, or you may have trouble talking them into a second session... unless you have some reduced recoil slug loads that is.

I personally do not like to run slugs thru choke tubes tighter than about Mod, OPMMV of course. As has been indicated, the less constricted tubes seem to work better with slugs.

You're going to have new shooters shooting slugs? Ouch!

If you really don't like them, have them shoot slugs from the prone position. :p

I believe that Remington recommends an Improved Cylinder (they make both slugs and shotguns, so I figure they know what they are talking about).

Personally, I'd spend the few bucks at Wal-Mart for an IC Remchoke, and make sure the thing's in there tight, with oil on the threads.

11-87 barrels are expensive. Premature wear is not worth it.

Slugs will shoot through a full choke AND your choke will be ruined.

Many years ago when I was a teenager I shot some slugs through a Zabala sxs 12 ga. just to see how they would work.

That gun was ruined - I learned the hard way.

Only shoot slugs through a full or modified choke it you want to ruin the choke.

The only slugs to shoot thru a smooth bore are Foster style slugs. These have a hollow base which mushrooms out to fit the bore. Since the nose is solid and the tail is hollow, it tends to fly (kinda) straight, something along the lines of a badminton birdie

The problem shooting slugs thru a choked bore is that the choke tends to grab the tail of the slug. The more choke, the more it grabs. Accuracy is typically poor to horrid.

I'd agree with the above. Unless you intensely dislike these people, I'd stay way from slugs. At best, use the reduced recoil ones and keep the mag tube full. The extra weight will help

My best results with slugs have been with Cylinder or Impoved Cylinder.
That is with the common Foster type slugs.
The worst option are slugs through some of the turkey guns: these
barrels are choked for shot loads only. And no slugs in a barrel
with a "jug" choke (overbored barrel diameter near the muzzle)
those are birdshot only.

What exactly happened? I have fired a limited number of 20 gauge slugs, I think all foster type through older type guns with fixed full choke barrels and it seemed ok. I also recently sold a friend a JC Higgins 20 gauge bolt action with a full choke barrel, I though it would be safe for some slug use but should I tell him otherwise?

I've shot slugs from a prone position and can't really say that it hurt me. Hell, the new Federal 3 inch magnum turkey loads didn't even both me that day. Maybe I was superman or something for a bout an hour.......who knows?

But out my gun, slugs don't bother me. They hit about as hard as a light target load.

Is this true even for threaded chokes?
I think your posting about the chokes with a twist for sabbot slugs. I have considered one of these since the cost of a 2nd barrel is alot more. But then again all I have ever used for whitetail (shotgun) is a smoothbore. most shots then have been 10-70ish yards. Ok 50$ for another 50 yards isn't so bad, but the sabbot ammo is 2x over reg slugs.

Hi Moonclip;

When I shot the slugs (the older type with e the hollow base) it was a long time ago - I was probably 16 or 17 so it was in the early 1970's - anyway, I had some leftover slugs from deerhunting and I decided to try them out in my relatively new (2 yrs old I bought it new) Spanish Zabala side by side 12 ga.

I put a few, at least 4, slugs thru both barrels, sighting at a large dead tree on the other side of a field, I'm guessing cause that was many years ago, around 50 yards at least. I hit the tree. I remember both barrels were way off, one high and to the left by about 18" the other low and to the right - but i was shooting standing with no rest so don't expect much.

Anyway, I decided a SxS was never going to work as a deer gun (iused an Ithaca with a polychoke for deer hunting but I thought the SxS could serve double duty if I was rabbit hunting and came across a black bear what can I say I was young).

The next season I went hunting for ducks and geese and I could not hit a thing - this was in Wisconsin and I had a goose permit for oneo f the zones around the Horicon Marsh area - they probably dopn't have those zones anymore since there are so many geese now.

I even tried it out by aiming at a sparrow about ten feet away - that sparrow lived. I missed it comepletely. Now I am not the best shot but I worked at a local trap club and new how to shoot good enough that this was not operator error.

Years later when I was in the Air Force (late 70's) I read somewhere (no internet so iit must have been a hunting magazine) that slugs will ruin your choke. That is when I figured out why that Zabala Sxs couldn't shoot straight anymore.

Maybe the Spanish gun was made cheaper - it was an inexpensive gun - but I know that after those sligs it never shot worth sh-t ever again. By the way I traded it for a Dan Wesson .357 - when I traded it I didn't know about the slugs ruining the choke I just new it couldn't hit anything - I hope the guy wanted it for HD and was planning on cutting the barrels down.

Anyway, thats my story and I'm sticking to it - if sdomeone does shoot slugs through a full choke I'd love to see them pattern the barrel afterwards.

Ok I went to the range all my trainees cancelled.

Buckshot through my 11-87 with full choke(Rem. screw in choke) 28" barrel patterned at 8 - 9" pattern at 25 yds. Then I shot a bunch of slugs and they flew straight my grouping wasn't great but I wasn't resting the gun on the bench but I got a bunch of the slugs in the middle so she shoots straight to 25 yds with a screw in Remchoke Full choke. Then I shot some more buck and the pattern was the same.

Ok now through the 18.5" 870 tactical the pattern huge at 25 yds only 4 of 15 pellets (this is all being done with 3" Winchester Buck) were on target I couldn't adjust the target distance to see the pattern. I was at the county range and they did me a favor shooting at 25 yds. I ran some slugs through it and it shot straight to 25 yds as well. Now I know these aren't effective hunting distances. I did this in case we have a bad hurricane with a lot of post hurricane bad behavior I wanted to know what I had. I may look into buying a short barrel that takes Remchokes for the 870. But that is really low on my list of priorities. I'm planning on getting my EBR soon. But if funds become available (proper hurricane prep. is a lot more than firearms and ammo)I'll get the different barrel. So the 870 will be dedicated to interior HD for now.

Sounds like a good day. Interior HD may not all your 870 can do. Try different ammo. I can double pattern size by switching brands.

Someone gave me a couple rounds of Wolf 00 to try. 12 pellet load. 10 yard patterns ran 24-29". The same 870 puts many other loads into a hand sized pattern at that range.
