.

They are opening a new Cabelas in Woodbury, MN this spring. There is a Gander Mountain about 1/8th mile from it. The Gander is one of the new "Gun World" Ganders where they have a lot of guns. The Cabelas won't be one of their destination locations. It'll be a smaller one.

Do you think the new Cabelas will kill Gander?
.

.

Bass Pro was going to open in the Mall of America. They chose not to because they couldn't get over a dispute about putting a street right to their store.

I can't believe they didn't build it over that dispute. They would have made a killing.
.

Here in San Antonio they don't kill each other at all. We have a Gander Mountain that just opened, a bass pro shop, bunch of academies stores, and a Cabelas thats about 50 miles from my house. The only store I wished had stayed open was sportsman warehouse, they closed up shop. Something about the ambience that I really enjoyed. One of their salesman spent over an hour and a half explaining to my brother about archery and what to get since he was interested.

From what I've heard, Gander Mtn. seems to be doing a pretty good job of killing themselves off on their own.

Gander Mountain is the reason I shop at Fleet Farm or Cabelas. Gander is right across town, but if I can't get it at Fleet Farm or my LGS I would rather drive an hour to Cabelas.

I'm not sure how they would have gone about putting a Bass Pro in the Mall of America. I'm sure they have some sort of no gun policy, so that definitely wouldn't have worked out very well. I would love to see Bass Pro make the move into lakes country. Come on, they have them in the desert in Phoenix and Las Vegas, but they don't have a single Bass Pro in the land of 10,000 lakes?

Gander in San Antonio is terribly expensive as compared to the monthly gun show down the road a bit and compared to Academy.

If you buy a gun at Gander, you really haven't done any price research.

Cabela's is a drive from town and expensive - unless you hit a sale, have points or something like that.

Sportsman's Warehouse was a nice store. Their staff - well, I once had to listen to a salesperson in 2008 have a screaming fit about Obama. Seems his kid put an Obama sign on her front lawn. Thus, salesman was disowning her and taking her out of the will. Like I care?

Sounds reasonable to me...

Gander closed in Richmond, Va. Not sure how they stayed open as long as they did. Consistently higher priced than Bass Pro and LGSs.

It has always astounded me how two such greedy competing retailers can build stores right across the street from each other. I prefer neither Gander nor Cabelas, so I guess the Frontiersman, Bills and the other smaller shops will still get my money. I have a friend who just loves the Gander in Burnsville and there is absolutely nothing I can say to change his mind. Wow.

I only buy from Gander when I NEED something that isn't available at the local gun shop (the LGS is always light on practice ammo and my local WalMart is still slim pickings) or if I find the rare deal on a gun there.

I actually picked up a .357 stainless New Vaquero for a reasonable price (about the same as buying online and paying the transfer) not too long ago. Also, my current carry piece is an SP101 i got from there. The guys behind the counter couldn't get the cylinder face to clean up, so they had to sell it pretty cheap, I guess. 5 minutes with a magic eraser and some Barkeeper's Friend, and my new gun looked mint:D

That said, I would shop at Cabela's over them any time. If for no other reason than they carry more black powder revolvers there. If possible, i like to hand pick those based on how the action feels, and i my Cabela's card gives me a lot more perks/points than my Gander card.

Here in the St. Louis area, we have a Bass Pro and a Cabela's within a few miles of each other. Gander Mtn just announced they are also opening a store in STL. We'll see how they do. Honestly, I don't shop at Bass Pro, and I have yet to even go into the Cabela's store. I generally use local gun shops or Midway for my shooting and reloading needs.

For what's it worth, I've been to Bass Pro in AZ, NV, and CA and the Cabela's in AZ.

They are all remarkably similar right down to the décor and giant fish tank.

So similar it makes me wonder if there is some kind of connection between the two (even if its a executive from one leaving to the other)

Gander built right next door to Academy here in B/CS.. Academy's parking lot is packed 24/7 Ganders always looks like its employees vehicles only. Not sure how they have stayed in business over the last few years.. Unless it's specifically there as a loss leader.

Gander has nothing to offer vs Cabelas. Even their credit card points system sucks. (paper credits that expire quickly).

They do fine in small market like Dunhams etc.

First, let me say that Gander sucks.

We had a Cabela's open just a few miles from a Gander. Gander's response was to remake the store as Gander Gun World. They still suck, but they have a huge selection. Gander, for all their suckiness, still seems to keep their doors open and charge stupid prices in spite of the competition from Cabela's and a Fleet Farm.

Gander here changed from a Sports Authority/Dick's type store to a gun oriented location. They do have an incredible variety of ammo in stock at all times, and a really nice selection of firearms. Haven't bought anything anywhere in a while (other than an AR online during a screaming Black Friday deal) so I have no idea on pricing. Nice store

There are Cabelas and Bass Pro close, both built well before they did the total remodel last fall.

I've TRIED to shop at Gander's several times, and never could; their prices are from a completely different planet from the larger, better stocked LGS right down the street from them.

I don't know who their market is, or who shops there?

Gander will blame Cabelas, but I'll blame $700 Glocks.

Their regular prices are insane....but they do have some good sales.

I got my Gen 3 19 for $500 when no one in my area had them for less than $550.

Also got a really good deal on some Irish Setter Boots.

They went out of business in my area and now Bass Pro is where I go to laugh at price tags.
