I have to replace the barrel on my Springfield 1911. The thought occurred to me that since they are in my home state, why not roadtrip to Berryville and have Wilson's do it for me? $270 for a "match grade" barrel, fitted and tested. Anyone have any experience with their barrels and/or smithing?

I have two Wilson's Classic .45 ACP pistols which include their 5" Match barrels and obviously installed by them. Both pistols are tackholers.

Good shooting and be safe.

I own a couple of Wilsons. They are marginally more accurate than other 1911s.

The law of diminishing returns definitely applies here. Is spending an extra thousand dollars on a Wilson worth a group that is one inch smaller at 25 yds? I don't know the answer.

I have Wilson barrels in a Colt and a custom on Caspian frame/slide. They are as good as any when fitted right. I doubt they will put it in while you wait, but it doesn't hurt to ask for an appointment, you might get a shop tour out of the deal.

I just installed a Wilson drop in barrel today in my Series 70 Colt. It really did just drop in with no fitting required. I may have been lucky but was prepared to do some minor fitting. Lock-up is excellent with the new bushing and slide stop (needed minor fitting). I think you will be happy with the results regardless if you put it in yourself or have them do it.

A full on hard fit match barrel in an otherwise stock normal Springer will be more accurate than stock, but you will have $750+ in a gun that will sell for $500. The lower lugs will likely need to be re-fit if you ever go the rest of the way and have the slide to frame fitted.

A drop in barrel makes more sense to me. I would either go all the way on accurizing and tuning, or put a drop in barrel in it.
