Wimps and Barbarians (on being a Man)

Heck, I replaced "guy" with "girl" and still only scored a 17. :uhoh:

BTW, I know for a fact that modelling is fake. ;)

I scored a 4. Okay, okay, the lady who cuts my hair is technically a stylist. But for me she's just a barber. :D

Besides, I'm not a SNAG, I'm a nerd. According to this test "Bryan: 80.95238095238095% nerd blood flows through your veins."

In the 1820s and 1830s, Davey Crockett was dismissed by the "civilized and
mannered" men of his day as a barbarian.

__________________________

I seem to remember that Crockett was, in fact, lionized in the "sophisticated" Eastern corridors as an exemplar of "the noble frontiersman" whose rough buckskins were like fine raiment and who knew the language of animals and could shoot the eye out of bar at a thousand paces. Dismissed? I don't think so. Misunderstood? No doubt. Was Crockett not one of America's first superstars?

Hillbilly, you make a great point.

Moore uses the single word "civilization," as many people do, to refer both to superficial social attributes (how a man dresses, his taste in music) and to substantive ones (how he treats other people). You rightly point out the flaw in his approach. Exhibiting civilized qualities superficially is no indicator of civilization in substantive matters. Your example, contrasting the manners and actions of Andrew Jackson with those of Davy Crockett, supports your point beautifully.

I agree also with your further point, that the double meaning of "civilization" is custom-designed to disguise the inhumanity, even brutality, of men who can afford to keep their boots clean and shiny.

PS: I took the metrosexual quiz with the same modifications Tam did... I got 14/50. Must be that I cut my own hair.

I read and interpreted the article (I think) in the same way Longeyes did. Moore's thesis involves more than what I think some of you are interpreting to be only the kind of "gentlemen" who dress for the hunt and stop at 6PM for their fine supper and after-dinner brandy, accepted from their humble servants with a haughty nod. Certainly the man with the $5000 drilling and good taste in brandy can be a gentleman, but they can also be a wimp or barbarian. Moore is not talking about one's station in life, he's talking about honor and ethics. And I'll go one step further and say that his thesis can be interpreted to include women as well as men. I certainly know a couple of women, when graded on ethics and honor, who fit more into Moore's definition of 'Man" than many males I know.

I got a 2/50 or 4%.

I learned early on how to treat ladies. I can come up with a few scenarios where being manly or a gentleman would actually be a felony.

Does checking the sharpness of a knife you are sharpening on your arm hair count as shaving it?

I think thats good for -2 bonus points.:D

Your moma should have taught you how to treat the female gender. Mine did. You open doors, you give them your seat, you carry heavy objects, it's yes mam or no mam, etc etc. My mother'd whoop my butt if I ever deviated from what she taught and with me being 54 and her being 75, I'd let her too:D
Trouble is, most mothers now days are so caught up in their own lives, they don't bother to teach thier kids common courtesy, much let how to treat the faires sex!

The problem with the "test" is they don't analyse the answers to inform us of what they meant by asking the questions in the first place. What the Hell do boxer shorts have to do with anything unless they are silk boxers. Penney's Towncraft cotton boxers don't exactly fill the bill for the "Metrosexual" image.

Being that I was always in a professional environment as an Electro-Mechanical Designer, I always dressed as nicely as I could. I always wore slacks, french-cuff shirts, dress shoes, and a tie. I would get remarks on how "this is a no-tie zone" etc.; but I would just tell them "I don't dress this way for you. I dress this way for me."

In the old days, I might have been called a Dandy as I like to dress nicely and professionally when I work. I also believe that the dress-down attitude in companies affects the quality of work and the work ethic in general. Many companies moved to a "casual Friday" every day look; but most have abandoned the policy after the work quality decreased.

Just as you are what you eat; you behave how you dress.

Hmm. I scored 1/50 on the metroquiz and I haven't seen anybody here ace it, there must be a bad or trick question in there somewhere. FOR I AM ALL MAN AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

As far as the fear of the loss of "manliness", that song is not a new one - every generation has heard it from self-appointed guardians of our poor poor endangered masculine souls. Read the Iliad, you'll find it there. Read La Mort d'Arthur, you'll find it there (oh no I used French words, loss of masculinity!). The more things change the more they stay the same. I suppose we can't keep American society from becoming increasingly urban and sedentary, but as individuals the vast majority of us can pretty much control our individual fates.

I'm raising two boys with my wife and I think we're doing all right but there's no fanfare, no loud and proud declarations of the virtues of our bigger and hairier sex. Just quiet normal everyday decency, honesty, and responsibility (and they will learn to shoot straight when the time comes). But you know, they're not perfect and I'm not either. I've actually looked around at real people I know and can observe firsthand and I see pretty much what I thought I would in terms of what I think of as manliness - not all good, certainly not all bad (but chivalry IS dead and I say good riddance). No media-inflamed worries here.

Since y'all are so intrigued......

19/50.

And when I wore my hair spiky, I never got my tips frosted! :D

cracked butt: "On the metrowhatever test, I got 1 out of 50."

With a screen name like yours, you'd better get a low score! :D

Is it me, or should I be alarmed that we have "men" in this society who scored higher than Tamara on the metrosexual quiz?
