Has anyone heard of any recalls of the Winchester model 70 in 7mm WSM caliber or recalls of Winchester 7mm WSM ammo? Recently a friend's rifle using factory Winchester ammo exploded. When I say exploded that is just what happened. Rifle parts went all over the place. He was lucky and suffered only minor injuries. A few months later his father had the same thing happen to him. Both rifles were bought at the same time at the same place and the serial numbers were within about 200 of each other. Both were using Winchester factory ammo bought at the same place at the same time, but I do not know if they were the same lot number. I have looked on the internet and found nothing. Winchester replaced the first rifle but (I am told) refused to replace the second rifle because, in the past, hand loads had been fired in it, although it exploded using factory ammo. I do not mean this as an attack on Winchester or their rifles, I am just asking about possible recalls. Thanks.

How would Winchester know what was being fired through it? I wouldn't tell them...especially if the incident happened with factory ammo.

The first rifle, my friends rife, at least the parts, was sent back to Winchester. Stuck in the chamber was what was left of the case. Apparently they were able to confirm that it was what was left of factory ammo. I suspect they were able to chemically check the powder residue. They asked my friend if he had ever fired hand loads and he told them the truth that he had not.
The second rifle, my friends father's rifle, I know less about. I understand that Winchester also asked him if the fired hand loads and he also told the truth, yes he had, but it was factory ammo the he was firing when the rifel exploded.
These things happened a few months ago. I think my friends father is just going to just "eat" the loss. As I recall, my friend, in exchange for the new rifle was not to tell anyone about the incident. Maybe others had the same deal with Winchester and therefore will not say anything. Note that I am not telling anything I should not be telling, I was there and saw the incident.

Got any pics? It's pretty common with cell phones now days to get pics of such incidents, especially when someone is injured.

Yes, I did take pictures. I have no idea how to post them and really don't see a reason to post them, they just show a blown up rifle. The reason I am asking is that I am thinking of buying a Winchester model 70 Safari model and I am not comfortable doing so knowing of two model 70's that blew up unless I can find the reason.
To the fellow who posted the recall site, thanks, I will look there. Jim

Though I'm sure you could buy a Model 70 Safari and be fine, you might be happier with a different rifle after your experiences. I have a model 70 (post-64) 270 and I trust it, but if I had your experience I would move on from Winchester.
