Winchester 100 Round Value Pack .38s

I had to buy some factory .38 ammo because I'm going to a class that doesn't allow reloads. The ammo I got was the Winchester 100 round Value Pack from Wal Mart. The bullets are 130 grain flat nose, FMJs and
I didn't expect much from them.

When I shot them at the range yesterday, during an Independence Day shoot, I was pleasantly surprised. The 130 grain bullets shot right at point of aim from my Smith M649. I shot from 15 or 20 yards single action and from about seven yards double action, printing nice five-shot groups in each mode.

It makes me wonder if the relatively new 135 grain self-defense loads would shoot the same way from this gun. I'll have to get some and see.

I suspect that the JHP loads are loaded to a higher velocity so they may shoot a little lower. You'll have to try them and see.

The white box stuff isn't low quality.

How much for the WWB? I just got a 642, and I need to stock up on .38s so that I can practice, practice, practice.

I don't know about 38's, but I pay 11.40 + or - a few pennies (I can't remember exactly) for 100 round WWB 9mm's at Wal-Mart. I would think 38's are about the same.

I had better accuracy with Winchester 125g +p .38's than with their regular 130g. Of course, I could have been shooting lousy too.

At near 12 dollars for 100 rounds of 9mm, the Walmart Value packs aren't really value packs anymore........IIRC the 38 value packs are around 16 dollars.

Oh, I don't know. When my local gun shop charges $14.95 for American Eagle, 115 gr FMJ, 50 rounds boxes, I call $12.00 for 100 115 gr. FMJ, a value.

When it comes to plinking you can't go wrong using the WWB 100 rnd value packs. I use their 38s, 9s, 40s and 45s. Never had a problem with any of them. Now if they would only make a 357 value pack I could complete the cycle.

The WWB 38-Special 100-packs at my local Wally World are about $16.97 ($8.49/50). I'm pretty happy with them in my Colt Detective Special. I'm not reloading, yet, but I keep all my brass from this ammo for future use. Since others are listing the other "Value Packs", I pay $11.43 for the 100-round 9mm and $19.98 for the 100-round 45ACP at Wally World, too.

I didn't think that the Win value pack .38s wouldn't be good ammo.
I just didn't expect they'd shoot so well since I'd always heard that Smith snubnoses are regulated for 158 grain loads.

I might even go back and get some more.

Last time I bought a couple 100 round Winchester Value Packs of 9mm last Winter it was $10.96 + tax a piece. On top of the tax and the hassle of going through Walmart and the clerk giving me a stupid crosseyed look while asking if it's for a handgun or a rifle and then if I'm 21 (I'm 25 and have a CCW) it's just not worth the hassle unless I'm totally out of ammo. I'd rather mail-order mine thank you very much.

It is good quality ammo though and the nice brass almost makes me wish I reloaded.

I bought 2 or 3 of the .38Spl WWB ammo from Wally-World. IIRC, it was around $17/100. Shoots decently in my cheap snubby .38 [Rohm/RG model. RG-38].

A real easy to shoot load in the .357 Vaquero, too.

AFAIK, from reading similar posts, most people seem to be happy with the Winchester white box loads, especially for the price.

Glad to hear that the bullets are flat nosed. That would make them great plinking fodder for my Marlin 1894c.

Here locally we have noticed that the 50-round packs seem to be round-nosed but the 100-round packs seem to be flat-nosed, or truncated cones.

I get surprisingly fine plinking accuracy with Federal American Eagle 130 gr FMJ .38 Specials. $9.49 per box of 50 from MidwayUSA isn't bad. It is cleaner ammo than the WWB.

I was pretty happy with the 100 round value-pack I tried. No surprise since I've been quite happy with the 100 round VPs in .40, .45 and 9mm. It was reasonably accurate and comfortable to shoot out of my Taurus 85 snub.

BTW- mine were round nose JHPs.

My Wal-Mart has the winchester .38 special 100/bpx for $14.99. My gun shop sells American Eagle for $8.95/box. I pay the extra four dollars. I find the winchester ammo to be smokey and less accurate in my Colt Trooper. I also find that it quickly builids up a carbon ring that will not allow a .357 round to seat after about 50 rounds fired.

I also buy from the local guy because when I come to him with stupid qustions, he gives me a good answer and waits until I leave before he laughs.
