Does anyone know how to remove the magazine tube from a Winchester 1300 shotgun? As far as I can tell, it looks like the only way to remove the tube is by hammering it lightly into the receiver. Of course, I'd like to confirm my intuition to avoid ruining my shotgun. Thanks in advance!

I must be missing something, because there is no way this magazine tube is sliding anywhere, forward (away from the receiver) or backward (into the receiver). I already have everything else stripped from the receiver (stock, barrel, action, etc.).

daniel, I'm not sure what 2AF is talking about, my magazine is tight, as in pressed-on or pinned in tight. Might I ask why you are trying to get it out? I've never seen a reason to, nor have I ever seen instructions to do so. It must be possible to do it without breaking something, as I see bare receivers and bare mag tubes for sale online from time to time.

EDIT: after getting my gun out, I am certain the mag tube is pressed into the receiver. The only way I can think of to get it off would be to fix the mag tube somehow (mag cap between two blocks of wood in a vise) and tap the receiver off of it with a rubber mallet or hammer and block of wood. Chances of damaging something are fairly good. Remember that the rec. is aluminum and will be very easy to damage with steel tools.

Mine is definitely pressed-on or pinned in as well.

Anyway, my original receiver has gotten pretty banged up, so I am replacing it with a new one in much better condition.

The "CORRECT" way to remove the mag tube.

The mag tube must be driven back into the receiver.

It is not pinned, it is pressed in.

Put the end cap on the mag tube and use a rubber hammer to drive it back into the receiver. Drive it back about 3/4 to 1 inch. ( it is very tight and will take several blows to drive it back )

Then the plastic part that is around the back of the tube inside the receiver will come off.

It can have 2 different types of plastic thing.

There is a 1 peice design that screws into the tube, if it has this type, you will turn the tube to unscrew the plastic part from the tube.

If it has a 2 peice plastic part, you will simply pull out the parts one at a time, one from the top and one from the bottom.

Once the plastic has been removed, the mag tube will come out the front of the receiver, but it's not easy, it is a press fit.

Putting it back is even harder than getting it out. I have done a 1300 and a 1400. I pulled mine out so I could refinish the guns.

When I put mine back in, I got the plastic feed throte put back in place and I held onto the mag tube with the gun pointed down and would bang the front of the receiver against my work bench (carpet covered wood) and it worked like a slide hammer. It took 20 or 30 hard blows to get it seated back into the receiver.

(((((GOOD LUCK )))))

Yeah, I took a look at mine too and the mag tube is definitely NOT going to slide out by hand. Don't know what I was thinking when I posted that. I'm getting old and haven't broken that gun down in awhile is the best excuse I can come up with right now. Sorry 'bout the bad info and I'll delete the 1st post.

How did you get the magazine tube to come out the front of the reciever. I have driven my tube back into the receiver and removed the plastic clips bu have not been able to figure out how to drive the tube forward. Nothing I have tried has been able to move it out the front. I have moved it slightly but not out.

Thanks,

I have gotten to the point of needing to drive the tube out the front of the receiver but can not get it out.

Can anyone tell me the methode they used to get the tube out?

Thanks,

You will have to do it like I described how to put it back together. Slam the receiver face against a bench while holding onto the mag tube. It will drive the receiver off the tube. It is very tough to do and you feel like you are gonna break something. But thats how I done mine.

Use a home-made press to remove the mag tube

I have a 1300 Defender 18" that came with a 5 shot mag tube. I also had a 1300 Defender 8 shot 18" barrel I bought on ebay that I wanted to put on my other Winchester 1200- I didn't know that the 8 shot used a longer mag tube. I decided to put the 8 shot barrel on my Defender and bought the longer mag tube from Numrich Gun Parts ( about $30). I removed the barrel, pushed the pin out of the receiver, and removed all the working parts. I put the mag tube cap on and drove the tube back into the receiver then removed the plastic parts. Then came the hard part- getting the mag tube out of the receiver- it is press-fit. I tried the banging the receiver into the padded workbench as in the previous posts but I could not get the tube to even budge. So I made a home-made press to pull the tube out. I took a 2x4 12" long and drilled a 1-1/8" hole crossways (thru the 4" part) in the center. I drilled a 1-1/8" hole in my Workmate folding tool bench. The mag tube is 1" OD. I put the mag tube/ receiver up thru the hole in the Workmate, slipped the 2x4 over the mag tube, and put the tube cap on to hold it together. I used 2 car scissors jacks under the 2x4- one on either side of the mag tube- sitting on top of the Workmate- to pull the mag tube out (put a blanket under the Workmate to catch the receiver when it falls out). I drove the 8 shot tube into the receiver, attached the plastic pieces, held them in place with a 1-1/2" c-clamp, lined everything up correctly, then used the 2x4 and jacks to pull the mag tube back up into the receiver. Remove the c-clamp once the plastic pieces start up into the receiver. Very easy- the only banging is to drive the mag tube back into the receiver (with the cap on and the stock butt on the floor). You could use hydraulic bottle jacks as well- it was so easy with the scissors jacks I just turned them by hand with no handle attached. Now my Defender is 8 shot and my 5 shot Defender barrel is on my 1200. Who's afraid of the Boogieman? Not me!!!!!!

I thought I explained that I wanted to make my Defender an 8 shot instead of a 5 shot. To do that the mag tube needs to be changed. That's why I wanted to do it. One of the other posters was replacing his receiver with a better one. There's two reasons right there. No offense taken- hopefully none given.
