Hey guys whats the word on winchester 231 powder. I would like to use it for 44 mag.went to winchester web page the 231 is sugested for 38,45, 9mm. lyman book gives refrance to powder. Has any body used this for the 44mag 240 GR.

W-231 is a great powder, and will work well for reduced loads in .44 Mag, but is much to fast for full tilt, or even close, .44 Mag loads.

You need some AA #9, W-296/H-110, N110, 2400, or Enforcer.

Wrong powder for magnum loads, you need W296. Or H110. And magnum primers. If you're gonna handload, use the right stuff, don't try to cheap out and just use what you have, or what your buddy has, or some other substitute.

I bought some a few years ago when powder was hard to find.it seemed to be a good all around but maybe im incorect. what does this powder mate well with (calibers)

231 works great in REDUCED .44 Magnum loads. It will throw 240gr lead semi-wadcutters at 1000-fps from a 6" S&W without even trying. Makes for a very pleasant range load for practicing and plinking.

But for full-tilt boogie, you want Winchester 296, Magnum Large pistol primers (or Winchester Large Pistol primers, they work well for magnum loads) and your bullet of choice. Don't reduce more than 3% and hang on! You can throw 240s at 1300-fps from a 6" barrel with this, though I recall mine clocked at a little over 1200.

I use W231 in my reduced load 44 Mag. with a 240 gr. LSWC. It is one of my most accurate loads. This is a target I shot from 15 yards with 10.0 grs. of W231 and a 240 gr. LSWC. It is 18 shots.

As the others have said, W231 will work fine for reduced .44 Magnum loads. If you want full power .44 Magnums look to W296. W231 is a faster powder than W296 that's why it's listed for the .38 Special and .45 auto on the site.
