Winchester 70 Extreme Weather SS or Kimber 8400 Montana

I am looking for a solid, all weather 30-06 and have narrowed my search to the Winchester 70 Extreme Weather SS or Kimber Montana 8400. I have handled the Winchester a little and it feels a little thick in the stock but not horrible. I have yet to get my hands on the Kimber and may have to make a trip out of town to a dealer. I would like to get opinions and thoughts from those who have owned one or both of these rifles. So what would you choose and why. Thanks in advance.

winchester model 7o extreme weather ss

I own both winchester extremes and kimber rifles,I have three winchester extreme ss in 300wsm 30-06 and 325 wsm.I have the kimbers in model 84 in 308 and 8400 in 300wsm.I have used these rifles extensively and my vote goes to the winchesters for the folowing reasons;my first firing after bore sighting with the winchester extreme in 300wsm ,put three bullets in one hole at one hundred yards. I have never done that with any rifle including my rem 700's and sako finlights.the extremes have more factory installed options and go in any weather rain or shine,also in selecting a short action ,you benefit from the reduced weight and quick action recylcing on the bolt.. I also have a kimber montana in 270wsm and find it shoots better with certain factory ammo as I do not reload, The extremes have the better bell and carson stock and the barrel is fluted .Right now I am sold on the new winchesters made by FN in Columbia ,South Carolina .In closing the winchester price is certainly lower than the kimbers.regards Marc

I have the Kimber in 308 and one of the Winchester Exteme Weather's in 308. For now I would vote Kimber, but I reserve the right to change my mind. I've had the Kimber about a year and a half. The Winchester 3 weeks.

If buying new the Kimber will be about $150-$200 more, but the better stock is easily worth the difference. If I can get the Winchester to shoot as good as I think it is capable of, I will place an order for a McMillan Edge for it. The factory stock is thick, clunky and weighs a lot more than it should. The McMillan will be about 9 oz. lighter and is both trimmer and stiffer. As they come from the factory the Kimber is 2 lbs lighter. My Winchester weighs 1/4 lb more than listed on Winchesters website.

For now the Kimber is more accurate, but the difference is very close. Most rifles shoot a little better after having a few shots fired through them and I think my Winchester will improve with some breaking in. As well as finding which loads it likes best. Today was just the 2nd trip to the range with it.

I like both rifles a lot even though I don't care much for the factory Winchester stock.

i have 3 kimbers now 8400 tactical-308 84m montana in 7mm-08 and a 8400 superamerica in 270wsm. amazing rifles, you get a match grade accuracy out of the box,the triggers are fully adjustable,and most or glass bedded from the factory. i have to say out of 3 rifles ive yet to get one that did not shot in the subs!

Ok, what are your thoughts on the Thompson Center Icon compared to the new Winchester 70?

I personally do not care for the thompson icon rifles,I strongly suggest you check out there bolt, I did and did not care for the way it cycled ,winchester is a far superior gun for the money,regards Marc
