Hey guys, I just picked up a real nice Winchester Model 94AE Trapper in 44 mag. It has the saddle ring and does not have a cross bolt or the tang safety. The serial numbers is 55119xx. Anybody know what year it was made? I checked a couple on-line sources but couldn't come up with anything.

I could start my own W94 thread, but this is probably as good a place as any to post a question.

I bought a used, but in 95% condition, W94 in .44 mag. for $125! Mine is an early 70’s model.

Anyway, it worked fine for 100 rounds or so, then suddenly the “follower” (the “thimble” like item in the ammo tube that sits on the spring and pushes the bullets toward the receiver) in the tube would not push back when trying to load it. If I remove the spring (which seems on the weak side and only strong enough to push the bullets forward) and tap the follower it will pop loose until the sping is replaced and it will again stick. Hoever, I can place one round in it, replace the follower and spring, close up the tube, load the weapon and it will fire fine again...

…but only until it is empty and I have to start the process over.

I have looked at the “follower” and it seems to be fine.

Any ideas?

Built after 1982.

You may be able to call Winchester customer service and ask. 800-333-3288 or 801-876-2711.

I know Colt and Remington will give you the year made on their guns. Never tried it with Winchester.

Winchester says that it's parts and service departments are still up and running.

Is the magazine tube dented or rusty inside? Follower could be out of round. Winchester mag springs do get weak.

Barring that, I'd clean the inside if the magazine tube real well, and buy a new spring and follower for it. Install it all lightly lubed of course.

if i recall correctly, anything under the 2.7 million mark is pre 1964...my pre '64 in .30-30 has a 26xxx serial number which puts it at 1963...
