I have a 1990's Winchester 94AE model that I'm looking to upgrade the sights on. It's a drilled/tapped receiver with the cross-bolt safety. Front sight is dovetailed into the barrel.

I was thinking an aperture sight, but wasn't sure if I should get tang-mounted or receiver-mounted.

Anyone have thoughts or recommendations? Would prefer not to have to drill new holes in this one!

XS makes a top mounted peep that screws into the scope holes.....look at the bottom left photo.

IMHO, receiver sights are far superior to tang sights on a field gun. Tangs are great for target use but a little much for hunting. Anything with any recoil and you have to be VERY careful not to get too close. The traditional receiver sights from Lyman and Williams get my vote. Apertures can be changed to suit your purpose or completely removed for a ghost ring. Never really cared for ghost rings and wide posts on a rifle. Just too coarse.

Thanks all. Does this look like what I need?

Yes, that's a good'un. But if your reciever doesn't have the two litle holes on the left side, it will have to be drilled/tapped to use this sight.

Yep and that's the one I'd get. Although I don't particularly care for fiber optic sights. They tend to wash out the target in bright sunlight. Not good enough for fine work, IMHO. I prefer a narrow black post or brass bead.

The XS sights I put on my 94 trapper are far superior to the Williams I originally put on. Nice theory, but the williams sights are cheap: had the set screw strip right out first time. Just one guy's opinion.

First I've heard that one but what do I know, only have a half dozen or so

Well now, that is the beauty of a chat forum that pools multiple opinions together. We all learn providing we don't take contrary opinions personally.

I have tried both the xs and the Lyman/Williams receiver sights and much prefer the receiver sights. The XS sight set too high for me, making me raise my cheek off the comb of the stock too much. I also greatly prefer the more precise adjustability of the receiver sights, and the greater ease of adjustment they offer.

Not at all but spend enough time on the Leverguns.com forum and you'll see that the Williams FP is highly regarded.

Very well. The praise for Williams FP on this thread and others is indeed impressive. Probably a better set-up for precise shooting at longer ranges. But, for my intended purpose of short range hunting (100 yrds or less) or PD, the simplicity of the XS system and ease of installation are very positive attributes. 2 of my lever guns wear them.

The durability of the Williams were just not what I had expected.

What set-screw?

The Williams Fool-Proof doesn't have set screws, it has click adjustments just like a scope.

Are were you talking about the cheaper 5D sight?

rcmodel: Yup. Therein lies the reason for my disapproval. Thanks much for clearing that commo gap up. The 5D is my only Williams experience, and the target of my comment. I was pretty confused on why such praise was directed at this product based on my experience, but now I understand.

I don't particularly care for the 5D either. Or the WGRS for that matter. I also don't particularly care for how the current XS Sight Co. came from Ashley Outdoors.
